June 29thMarket Review
Lubbock Downtown farmers Market’s last market in June was a hot one! Even with the hot weather there were many more vendors in attendance this market as crops are starting to ripen. The food truck count was also up with each vendor count and food truck count totaling 55.
The LDFM Food Truck Court was popular this week as we had Smoking Dicks Pork Rinds return, as well as newbies Hippy Donuts and Miss B’s Mobile Boba. Smoking Dick’s has a great variety of flavors for their pork rinds, so you can never go wrong, and Hippy Donuts had mini donuts dressed in delicious looking ways! There were also great fruit cups tacos, burgers, and delicious pizza from Crusty’s Woodfire Pizza. There are two separate coffee stands to keep you well caffeinated in your early morning shopping trip. If there is a truck that you are missing just check back next week and it may be there as the trucks will trade off ever few weeks. The Garden is graciously allowing market goers to eat their findings in the court in their patio area while being able to enjoy live music each week.
As said in the start of the season the produce offered is starting to shift as the winter veggies are starting to finish up and the summer veggies are nearly in full swing. This year has been a hard one for many vendors as the hail storms have done a lot of damage to crops, but nevertheless they are getting the produce ready for you to enjoy! This week was a big one for everyone as the weather has been kind and many veggies are starting to ripen. Tomatoes seemed to be a popular produce this week as well as onions, squash, zucchini, and cantaloupe. Sunburst Farm’s was back this week with many types of squash that I didn’t even know existed as well as yummy cantaloupe straight off the vine! Primal Gardens had a good variety of leafy greens like salads, herbs, chard, and tomatoes. Other finds were green beans, garlic, arugula, kale, pea shoots, beats, radishes, and carrots (a market favorite). The vendors also had jar goods like pickles from Grandma Nettie’s Pickles, jellies at multiple stands, fruit preserves, and infused olive oils. Something I thought was fun was that Block 20 infuses honey with different flavors like blackberry, apricot, peach, and cinnamon. Also, in attendance were vendors selling fresh eggs, chicken, pork and beef products. If you want eggs though come early because that is one of the first products that we sell out of at the Market!
LDFM also has great stands that offer a variety of treats. Macaround sells authentic macarons, baklava and meringue cookies, and Debbie’s Kitchen offers treats like candied pecans, spicy peanuts, fruit leathers, and fruit chips. We have so many great treat stands with such a variety there is always something for someone, even gluten and grain free! While we are still on a search for a baker, we do have Sarah making fresh organic flour and corn tortillas!
We don’t have just consumable products here at the farmers market as we also have vendors like Gnarled Roots who make leather earrings, and cute headbands. There is also Local Lubbock who is all about, you guessed it, Lubbock. They have t-shirts, stickers, and information about how to keep your experience in Lubbock Local. There are vendors who sell jewelry, t-shirts, macramé, woodwork, and more! The Lubbock Master Gardeners Association was in attendance this week to give information to those shopping, which was especially great for those buying plants from the market to plant themselves!
We are lucky enough to also have a great relationship with dogs here at LDFM, even having stands dedicated specifically for them such as treats and outfits! Many vendors provide water bowls to keep your furry friends well hydrated. Each week we take a photo of the Dog of The Day sponsored by The Tornado Gallery. A few weeks ago we had the animal shelter host an adoption event at the market, and we are glad to say they will be back each month to give our shoppers a chance to find a forever friend! They will be here again for the July 6thmarket with dogs ready to adopt. If you have been looking to build your family, next week is a great time! Brady is our Tornado Gallery ‘Dog of the Day!’ She is also a rescue. Thank you to her family for giving Brady a second chance!
