July 13th Market Review
This week’s Farmers Market was another hot one as we venture into the summer. Even with the hot weather there were many more vendors in attendance this market as crops are ready to be consumed, but there are still more vendors to come as interest grows. The total vendor count was also up with total of 55 vendors at this market.
The LDFM Food Truck Court had a big turnout with eight trucks in attendance. As the season goes on LDFM is committed to giving you a variety of truck options new and old. This week we had Mama Thai’s for the first time serving anything from Pad Thai to Thai Tacos. There were fruit cups from Red’s and pork rinds, frozen teas, Filipino food, and more. There are two separate coffee stands to keep you well caffeinated in your early morning shopping trip. If there is a truck that you are missing just check back next week and it may be there as the trucks will trade off ever few weeks. The Garden is graciously allowing market goers to eat their findings in the court in their patio area while being able to enjoy live music each week.
This year has been a hard one for many vendors as the hail storms have done a lot of damage to crops, but nevertheless they are getting the produce ready for you to enjoy! This week was a big one for everyone as the weather has been kind and many veggies are starting to ripen. We had some newcomers these past few weeks like Reimer Farms and Zuke’s farm. Tomatoes seemed to be a popular produce this week as well as onions, squash, zucchini, and cantaloupe. Other finds were green beans, garlic, arugula, kale, pea shoots, beats, radishes, and carrots (a market favorite). The vendors also had jar goods like pickles from Grandma Nettie’s Pickles, jellies at multiple stands, fruit preserves, and infused olive oils. Something I thought was fun was that Block 20 infuses honey with different flavors like blackberry, apricot, peach, and cinnamon. Also, in attendance were vendors selling fresh eggs, chicken, pork and beef products. This week we also had goat’s cheese, adding to the products available at the market! If you want eggs though come early because that is one of the first products that we sell out of at the Market! We are lucky to have vendors who not only sell produce but will sell you the plants to grow your own as well as give you the knowledge you need to let it grow well! A popular one here is our citrus tree stand who offers this knowledge with produce that isn’t usually grown here in Lubbock.
LDFM also has great stands that offer a variety of treats. Whether you have allergies or not there is going to be something for everyone at our treat stands. We have so many great treat stands with such a variety there is always something for someone, even gluten and grain free! While we are still on a search for a baker, we do have Sarah making fresh organic flour and corn tortillas!
We don’t have just consumable products here at the farmers market as we also have vendors like Thistledew Lavender Farm who sells body butters and other spa products. There is also Local Lubbock who is all about, you guessed it, Lubbock. They have t-shirts, stickers, and information about how to keep your experience in Lubbock Local. There are vendors who sell jewelry, t-shirts, macramé, woodwork, and more! We are lucky enough to also have a great relationship with dogs here at LDFM, even having stands dedicated specifically for them such as treats and outfits! Many vendors provide water bowls to keep your furry friends well hydrated. A few weeks ago we had the animal shelter host an adoption event at the market, and we are glad to say they will be back each month to give our shoppers a chance to find a forever friend! Each week we take a photo of the Dog of The Day sponsored by The Tornado Gallery.
