July 27th Market Review
Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market was an exceptional one this Saturday. We had 47 vendors in attendance, with newcomer vendors and food trucks! The weather was great for the market with lower than normal temperatures for most of the market. Vendors had plenty to sell and customers came to buy as they showed up right at open to try to get ahead of the lines!
The market is now in it’s busiest time as crops are being harvested new each week, and many varieties of summer veggies are becoming ready. Don’t worry if you come looking for something out of season, as we are lucky to have vendors that grow some items in greenhouses or hydroponic farms, making them available through the market season. There was plenty to choose from at this market as there were many types of squash available like golden rod, and spaghetti squash. The usual onion, spring onion, tomato (green and red), corn, green beans, bell pepper, chilis, eggplant, carrots, cucumber (and lemon cucumber yum!), celery, radishes, and micro varieties. If it’s fruit you were looking for we had peaches, cantaloupes, cherries, strawberries and watermelon. If you weren’t sure exactly what you wanted booths like Block 20 had “variety” baskets to test a little bit of everything. The best part of this week was the appearance of the ever so requested and waited for OKRA!
Now, we understand if you already went grocery shopping, join us anyways for those items that will round of your meals just right. At the market there are stands that have infused olive oils; homemade spices like jalapeno salt, sriracha salt, and garlic salt; herbs like rosemary, basil, dill, and cilantro; and salsa.
My favorites at the market must be the many treat stands we have at the market. There are wedding cookies, fudge, lollipops, gluten free items, German apple cakes, and more. There are vendors that sell honey (even infused); apple and peach butter; and jams to complement breads or tortillas.
LDFM also has vendors that sell spa products, candles, lip balms, jewelry, dog clothes, human clothes, macramé, and more. We have a stand that sells animal t-shirts that donates proceeds back to animals. Another stand has amazing art prints that can also come in stickers and greeting cards as well!
We are lucky enough to also have a great relationship with dogs here at LDFM, even having stands dedicated specifically for them such as treats and outfits! Many vendors provide water bowls to keep your furry friends well hydrated. Next week we will have the West Texas Humane Society host an adoption event at the market. They will be present on the first Saturday of every month during the 2019 season to give our shoppers a chance to find a forever friend! Each week we take a photo of the Dog of The Day sponsored by The Tornado Gallery. This week’s Dog of the Day (pictured below) is Tes. Tes is a retired therapy dog. She worked with hospice patients. She is the sweetest dog! Congratulations to Tes!!!
