September 14th Market Review
This Saturdays Market was a beautiful one. The weather remained cool for the duration of the market, showing the shift in summer to fall weather. At the market the available items are also starting to shift from the summer veggies to the fall/winter veggies. Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market loves the community that we set up in. We try to strive to have at least one non-profit a month set up with us to raise money or just awareness. Every first Saturday of the month we have the Humane Society out with dogs available to adopt, and this past week we had the boy scouts selling their popcorn!
Along with our wanting to give back LDFM is running a food drive for the South Plains Food Bank pantry and Grub farm. We are taking food donations as well as cash donations to give to them. Each week that you donate we will enter you into a drawing to get a $50 market voucher to shop! We hope you can join us in an effort to give back to the community!
This week (and last) we got to see some Honey Crisp apples from our vendor The Orchard. This is one of those fall fruits that we can’t wait to have all summer! Their stand always has great apple butters as well as apple cakes and other apple products, so why not try the ones that they grow! Another, I’m sure, well anticipated veggie that has started to pop up at the market are pumpkins! We had a couple of vendors that had them including Sunburst Farms who graced us with their presence this past week. Pumpkins are great for decorating for fall or for eating like roasting the seeds! We still have great amounts of squash varieties, onions, lots of red and green tomatoes (which are great for salsa), bell peppers, okra, and an awesome variety of peppers right now (jalapeno, serrano, Anaheim, chile de ancho, etc). We still have delicious watermelons and cantaloupes that are picked right off the vine for LDFM shoppers to enjoy!
This week we had some great new additions to our snacks as Canyon Rim Granola was with us this week selling granola varieties like Coco Banana, Lemon Blueberry, Cranberry Vanilla, and Cinnamon Peach! We also had Fabcorn which is made 100% from corn it is free of kernels and hulls! They are always trying to come up with different flavors to match the season!
Some highlights of our usual vendors for me this week was that Diamond C Meats makes their own buns to go with their hamburger meat! Plainview farms has the condiments covered since they sell ketchup and mustard at their stand, as well as cornmeal to make cornbread with the black-eyed peas you get at the market (we have lots!). We also have a great selection of jellies and jams at the market. With Block 20 having watermelon, peach, wild plum, pepper, and apricot; and Bob’s Jelly at the Onion Shed having wild mustang grape, plum, blueberry, strawberry, peach, cherry, and apricot, you will never run out of flavor options!
LDFM has more than just food, as we have lavender spa products, candles, balms, t-shirts, jewelry, and more. There are also vendors that sell dog treats, doggie bag holders, dog outfits, dog bandanas, shampoos, and paw balms! We are lucky enough to also have a great relationship with dogs here at LDFM, even having stands dedicated specifically for them such as treats and outfits! Many vendors provide water bowls to keep your furry friends well hydrated. Each week we take a photo of the Dog of The Day sponsored by The Tornado Gallery. This sweet boy is Sammy! Give him a hug…he’s our Tornado Gallery ‘Dog of the Day for September 14th. Sit…Stay…Good Boy!
