Lubbock Downtown Farmer’s Market Review July 3rd
Nobody wants it to rain on the parade, but on Friday evening neither The 4th on Broadway nor the Market knew if they would be rained out. Luckily for both Saturday morning events, the day was cloudy with the occasional burst of Texas sun. We at the Market felt a little concerned at first. Having to compete with 4th on Broadway after a year of absence due to the pandemic was on everybody’s mind. However, the 43 vendors that participated were thrilled because we had a massive turn out as people stopped by after the parade on Broadway!
We had more dogs then ever! We had kids in new fangled Red Speed Wagons pulled by parents who were out to show the kids what a holiday weekend looks like. The people who stopped by from the parade were already in the holiday spirit and they brought it with them. It was a great day for newcomers as they wandered through the streets to see what the Market is all about. This created a lot of conversations between the vendors and the inquisitive shoppers. This informative exchange helps make a good marketplace.
It was a huge family day, and we had several families that stopped by to play sticks. We even got some dads and moms in on it too! Mary does the teaching… I am there to “show off”! We both enjoy helping the kids learn how to elevate the stick for the first time and enjoy seeing their excitement when they accomplish even the smallest of feats. I took so many pictures of so many dogs, but we can only honor one. Chuck took this picture of Flynn giving his fiercest argument on why he should be The Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of The Day! Congratulations Flynn! You win!
Now on to our featured vendors
THE ONION SHED has been a presence at the Market for 7 years, and offers much more than onions! Mike & Amy Hill have duck eggs from their 19 ducks, strawberries & blackberries from their own farm in Hockley (500 plants of each!), a variety of dried seasonings they make such as lemon pepper, sriracha salt, jalapeno garlic salt, & hatch chili lime salt. They also have pecans at the bargain price of $5/lb, with all of the proceeds going to the Children’s Home. These pecans come from the orchard at the Children’s Home, where Mike works full time as the facilities manager. Coming soon will be potatoes, tomatoes, and melons!
QUAIL FEATHER FARMS is run by John Shankles & Ashley Myers, and have been coming to market for 4 years. Based in Slaton, they are an all organic operation with a nice array of produce. Currently they have carrots, onion, turnips, radicchio, cucumbers, squash, and salad mixes, a tomato out of Crosbyton called Juicy Lucy, plus fresh cut flowers. They too will soon have melons! Quail Feathers also provides for 20 CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares, which they deliver twice a week. That’s a lot of output from their 2 acre farm, and you can be assured of it being chemical free!
New to the market is M & M LANDSCAPE. Amanda & Mike Matthies have onions, cucumbers and beets, plus a lovely crop of squashes, including an unusual German custard Patty Pan. Soon they will have unconventional varieties of green beans (11 kinds), okra (12 kinds including pink & orange), & peppers (20 kinds). They grow without pesticides & herbicides, and are dedicated to bringing new & exciting produce to you the buyer! Joining M & M is Carol Jean Blakely (Amanda’s mom) with her homemade crafts. She has journals, burp clothes, and her ingenious gathering aprons & shirts! Come out to support these hardworking growers and creators!
We are hopeful that those who were visiting for the first time will come back and see what’s new from week to week and continue to support the local growers and craftsmen who keep bringing their goods to show. We are getting into the swing of things and we are seeing wonderful fruits, vegetables, homemade sauces and beautiful flowers all grown and produced right here by our neighbors from around the Lubbock area! Arts, Crafts, baked goods, and so much more are offered every Saturday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at The Lubbock Downtown Farmer’s Market. Stop by and see what it’s all about!
