Lubbock Downtown Farmer’s Market review July 31

Once again the day began with vendors setting up in the morning shadows and the cool morning air. There were 48 vendors on Buddy Holly Ave. on this Market Day. We had a couple of new vendors and a few regulars that didn’t make it. That’s how it rolls, and what makes each Market Day a little different. We experienced a slower day with fewer shoppers than usual. However, like any Market Day, some of the vendors had better sales than others. We are seeing more and more produce with each market and hope that you will stop by to shop for your summer corn, melon, squash, tomatoes, and so much more!
There are a lot of young parents with strollers, and the kids seem to get a kick out of the goings on around them. The dogs that come out with their people seem to be having much fun, as they are all smiles and tail wagging.

We are fond of the canine visitors and each week we present one of them with the Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the week. Franklin was chosen from the dozens of dogs that stopped by the Market Information Booth. Congratulations to Franklin!

The streets got warmer as the day progressed, and by closing time it was hot and humid! I want to say that all of our vendors deal with whatever the weather might throw at them, and they are all dedicated and tough when it comes to handling the heat. We are only open for 4 hours, but the vendors include set up and break down into the equation. By the time they are packed and headed home, there is a sense of accomplishment mixed with exhaustion.

Now to this week’s Vendors Spotlight! Not to be redundant, we will tell you about two more produce providers. It is amazing how much wonderful food is being grown right here in our area!

First up is 15 FARM in their first appearance at the Market. Husband & wife team George & Seretha Anthony grow out in Littlefield on 1 acre of land. They have 100 chickens, and 7 head of cattle that fertilize their land, so no chemicals are used. The free range chickens are great at eating bugs and aerating the soil! They also supply lots of eggs, which will be delivered to you for only $2/dz! 15 Farms is currently offering cucumber, zucchini, squash, onion, corn (non GMO), and orange watermelon. They also sell animal feed for cows, chicken, pigs, & goats. Welcome to the market!

Also new this year is ROCKING A&W FARM & RANCH, a family operation run by Andrew & Wendy Babcock, and their charming children McKenna, Carleygh, Kiki, & Cameron. They grow on @ 2 acres out by Friendship. Andrew is the head of the Fine Arts Department for LISD, and Wendy is the choir director for Hutchinson Jr. High. They started growing last year during Covid as a family activity, and decided they really liked it! They have a bounty of sweet corn, zucchini & squash, black-eyed peas, and some very tasty zucchini bread! Soon they will have okra & watermelon also.

Our third spotlight veers away from produce to HOLY COW BEEF. Owned by Weldon & Ann Warren, they have been a presence at the market for 10 years! They provide all natural grassfed Angus Beef that is 100% organic. No antibiotics or hormones for the animal, and no pesticides or herbicides for the grass. These people are the real deal! Weldon explained that Federal guidelines for “grassfed” beef in the supermarkets is lax, and the consumer is not getting the quality they think they are (although they pay more for it). Joining with 3 other like minded ranchers, they beat the odds and have grown into a highly successful enterprise. Their ground beef is reasonably priced at $6.99/lb., and they offer a variety of cuts, including beef bacon! They have brokered with poultry growers to provide chicken & turkey as well. You’ll be drawn to their booth by the enticing aroma of their grilled sausage on a stick. For more information visit www.HolyCowBeef.com. For ordering info, visit HolyCowBeef@Reagan.com.

The Lubbock Downtown Farmer’s Market will continue through the summer months and into October,
so we hope that we will continue to see our regular customers and that new folks will find their way down to 19th and Buddy Holly during the coming months. Thank you to all who support this community effort. See you soon at the Market!
