The Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market, the original and still the best market for locally grown produce! Visit the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market Saturday, August 28th at 19th and Buddy Holly Ave from 9:00AM to 1:00PM for a taste of downtown Lubbock, and the finest in local produce, meat, baked goods and arts. We are a kid friendly, dog friendly, family event in the heart of the Depot District. Our 2021 market season will be held every Saturday morning through October 16th.

Lubbock Downtown Farmer’s Market review Aug. 21

The morning was overcast and cool, which is always a pleasant beginning for the Market. We had 53 vendors who felt the same I am sure. The set up pace was quick and the shoppers began to show up early. We could tell immediately that shopper traffic was heavier than the two previous weeks. The increase in the number of shoppers gave an uplifting feeling for all of us involved. Schools are in session and Texas Tech begins this week so the fall season is approaching quickly.

We have only 8  Markets left. We added a few new vendors this week and of course new shoppers and new dogs that we are happy to have in attendance. The highlight was that the Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals Basketball team graced our Market. These fine young ladies are the Division II National Champions. They joined us after attending yoga on the Buddy Holly Plaza, which is a joint effort headed by David Mitchell and supported by Lubbock Parks and Recreation. The weekly yoga event is held every Saturday morning from 9 am to 10 am. It is open to the public, and we hope that if you are actively practicing or just beginning that you will feel welcome to join in.

It got crazy around the stick twirling booth with lots of kids and adults giving it a try. With so much pedestrian traffic the morning moved quickly and seemed shortened even though many vendors broke camp a little later than usual. It stayed pleasant throughout the morning and that certainly was a major factor in the attendance and late break down. As I watch the action I am always aware of the mingling that occurs between so many people. It is a place of reunions and new friendships in the making. That is an added bonus of the Market and those things are free.

Mary and I have many regulars who stop by to chat and check in and often old friends who have not been around for awhile stop to say hello. I am sure many of the other vendors might say the same thing. It is a wonderful atmosphere to say the least.

We always have dogs. Lots and lots of dogs. We award our favorite dog the title of Tornado Industrial/Art Dog of the Day and this week we are so happy to introduce our winner Trinity. I would say our four legged friend, but Trinity is a three legged dog who regularly shows up at the market and makes lots of friends. Atta boy Trinity!

Now it’s time to meet the vendors!

Joann Altman has LULUBUG, a booth filled with fun & funky earrings and other jewelry. This is her first year at the market, although she has been doing the business for 3 years. The enterprise started out with her and her grand daughter Grace Anne doing crafts together. They found themselves with so many pieces that Joann decided to start a business. She works out of her home and has an Etsy account.  Joann has worked at Texas Tech Law School for 22 years, and finds the jewelry making to be a great stress reliever! Come see her creations!

We have another creative booth with FERGUSON’S CNC. Hailing from Plainview, Brett Ferguson can put any image you want on a block of wood, thanks to his expertise with a computer pneumatic control  (CNC). This is basically a router controlled by a computer, so any design is able to be duplicated. You’ll see all types of wood, all sorts of depths and configurations, and be charmed by him & his Dad as they show their wares.

FLATCITY FARMS is a lovely stand of fresh cut flowers, grown locally by Angie Baldelmar and her husband. They’ve been a bright spot at the market for 4 years now, and she and her helper Nick Campos seem to sell out most Saturdays. Currently growing on 82nd & Milwaukee, they have bought land and plan to build in East Lubbock. Starting out in their backyard, Angie & her husband decided they wanted more joy & beauty in their lives, so expanded the flower growing into a business. You see people walking around the market with these happy bouquets in mason jars, and it does bring joy! They also sell at the Wolfforth Market, and do special orders for events. In addition, they have nicely designed t-shirts, hats, and pressed flower framed art.

As mentioned we only have 8 more Saturdays left for the Market and hope that you will find the time to stop by and be a part of our community event. We are located at 19th and Buddy Holly Ave. and look forward to seeing our friends and neighbors each Saturday until October 16th.
