Market Review July 2, 2022
by Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
The Fourth of July weekend started with First Friday Art Trail. Our Lubbock Downtown Farmer’s Market followed that with a beautiful summer morning and vendors a plenty setting up and getting ready. There was a jam packed weekend of festivities ahead for area residents. Buffalo Springs Lake had their annual fireworks display on Saturday. The City of Lubbock held their 4th on Broadway on Monday, which is a day long celebration with parades, music and fireworks to finish of the holiday weekend. We at the Market were celebrating the arrival of more of our fruit and vegetables vendors, who bring with them the family farm grown produce that fuels our market.
The number of shoppers varies from week to week, and with all the holiday action going on I think we had a dip in the number of shoppers. However, the crowd of shoppers that came to Market seemed upbeat with many people and pets dressed in Red White and Blue. The visitors to our market are forever changing and old friends never fail to drop in to say hello. We had many of our regular customers out, and with them we are seeing loaded grocery tote bags full of our vendors wares, leaving with a sense of satisfaction. Some of the newer shoppers catch on pretty quick and become regulars who return to visit their favorite vendors and the friends around the market that they make.
It is not just produce, but homemade pickled goods, salsa, mustards, mushrooms, honey, fresh baked goods, beef and pork, fresh eggs and more. Arts and crafts are well represented, including leather works and wood. We have jewelry and fresh flowers. Always fresh coffee and food vendors. We are very dog friendly and offer a free dog treat and we make sure the water bowl is full for our four legged friends.
We choose a dog each week and honor it as our Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day. We are happy to introduce this bundle of joy named Buttercup. Congratulations Buttercup! We are looking forward to keeping our produce vendors bringing their bounty from the earth to our Lubbock Downtown Farmer’s Market and hope you will come out to join us every Saturday morning from 9:00 to 1:00 at 19th and Buddy Holly Ave.
Our highlighted vendor this week is Paula Klawiter, with her newly created business KH KLAWITER HOUSE. Paula is baking up some lovely treats for us, including macarons, Rice Krispie treats, Rumchata cupcakes, and baked fruit pies. All of her goods are made completely from scratch, and are created with her love of baking. Paula had a furniture upholstery business for 13 years, but Covid and the subsequent delays in shipping made her have to change her business model. She’s been baking since she was 4 years old, so it seemed like a good fit. Her daughter Jade helps out with the booth. Paula has created an Instagram account, which is not only about baking, but various other lifestyle topics including home renovation, and how to keep chickens and other farm animals. Check it out!
We would like to thank everyone who came out to the July 2nd market and we hope to see you next week at the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market!
