Market Review July 9
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
We had an extremely pleasant morning to set up our tents. The winds were calm and the morning cool after the showers we had the night before. There was plenty of produce, which is great to see and really makes a difference in the number of shoppers that visit our Market. The watermelons were a big hit. As a spectator, I must say I enjoy watching people carry watermelons to their cars. For some it is a challenge, while others are more graceful. I expect more watermelon carrying as the summer continues.
We are happy to offer farm fresh squash, corn, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, leeks, and herbs…fresh off the tree peaches and fresh off the vine cantaloupe. It is good to see such a variety of fruits and vegetables back at the Market. Our bakers have a wide variety of goodies that are made with pride and tender loving care, as are all the pickled goods, mustards, jams and jellies, hot sauces and salsas. We welcomed a couple of new vendors, and there happened to be a girls sports tournament going on here in Lubbock. We had the pleasure of speaking with two groups from Midland. They were excited to be at the Market and took advantage of some easy shopping with so many different items in one place. It made souvenir shopping a breeze.
It is refreshing to talk to people who are just visiting. For the most part I think Lubbock is a place that these type of visitors enjoy. They seemed to be having fun and creating good memories of their time in Lubbock. There was a young boy from Brooklyn, N.Y. here visiting his grandmother. He never stopped grinning and felt compelled to give the Wizard a hug. I had a few kids play with the sticks and I got lots of practice in myself. It was a busy Market. It was well attended and the vendors seemed to have done well. We had several vendors who sold out of their wares and packed up the tables and got off the hot streets. We encourage people to come early and beat the heat. We take into consideration our canine friends and offer cool clean water, a treat , and a shady tree if they need a rest spot. We also like to include our dog friends by awarding one dog the titled of Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day. This little fur ball is Abu and we are happy that Abu was able to visit our Market.
We want to say thanks to our vendors and shoppers for making this a great Saturday shopping experience for people of all ages. We hope you will stop by and bring a friend to Lubbock Downtown Farmer’s Market located at 19th and Buddy Holly Ave. Every Sat. from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.
And now for our vendor highlight of the week! We are proud to introduce PLEASURE LAKES FARMS. Drew Stevens came all the way from Texaco, New Mexico with her lovely bunches of lavender. This is her first time at our Market, and said she really liked it! She was told about the market by Danny Neel of the Bijou Hair Salon (Drew comes to Lubbock just to get her hair cut there), and says she will definitely be back! She and her family grow 300 lavender plants back in Texaco, as well as dahlias for cut flowers. The plants are organically grown. They make lavender syrups, scones, and cookies they sell in Texaco at at a local coffee shop, but plan to bring here next time they come to Lubbock. Oh, the fragrance of fresh lavender!
We would like to thank everyone who made it to our market this week and hope to see you at next Saturday’s market!
