August 6th Market Review
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
We had a busy Market on Saturday. It started slow with several vendors arriving a little late, and the shoppers arrived a bit slower than normal too! But have no fear, the shoppers showed up in good numbers and our vendors were ready when they got there. We had several people stop by our booth who were visiting from other places, and enjoying the Market for the first time.
Our Market serves as a real “thing to do” when entertaining visitors from afar. We had a family from Oregon who were here to help their daughter get back to school at Texas Tech. These encounters are a real joy! Getting to interact with people from other places gives both parties an opportunity to learn from people outside the norm.
We are getting a steady stream of fruits and vegetables at the Market. There are fresh from the farm peaches, watermelons, squash, onions, potatoes, okra, mushrooms, pecans, garlic, and so much more to fill your shopping bags. That is what our Downtown Farmer’s Market prides itself on. We are here for both the farmer and the consumer. Our arts and craft vendors round things out and help to create a shopping experience with some local flair. Now throw in fresh home baked goods and coffee from Gold Stripe and we have covered all the bases.
We always have a lot of baby strollers on the street and this week was no different. What a great way to do some family together time! We are kid friendly and we are seeing more and more young families supporting the Market. We also had a few barkers that got pretty vocal! I think our dog friends get more excited about being at the Market than some people. There is always an abundance of tail wagging and friend making among our canine friends.
We like to honor one dog each week to show our appreciation to the dogs and dog owners who add so much to our Market. We declare that this week’s Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day to be Bandit! Bandit made some new friends and we congratulated him!
We are at the midway mark for the Lubbock Downtown Farmer’s Market and we look forward to the next two and a half months to come. We hope that you will come by 19th and Buddy Holly Ave., and support our Market and join in the fun. Every Saturday from 9:00 to 1:00.
This week we are highlighting yet another new vendor, McKenna Shaffer. Her booth JAX & REMI BOUTIQUE, features custom t-shirts and signs. When asked what made her start her business, she said she just didn’t see anything else out there quite like it. She creates all her own designs for the shirts and cute and catchy signs, and will custom design either for whatever you want. Coming all the way from Odessa, this young marketing major is another bright spot at the market!
We would like to thank everyone who came out to the August 6th market and hope to see you next Saturday!
