August 13th 2022 Market Review
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
One of the best things about being a vendor at the Market is the weekly meeting of the regulars. We all get to know each other. We all are hoping for everybody to do well. There are always greetings and inquiries as to how things have gone since last we met. We welcome the new vendors, which we always seem to have.
Our farmers are still bringing in fresh fruits and vegetables despite this brutal summer, which has stunted so many home gardens this year. Being home gardeners ourselves, we know how difficult this year has been! Mary and I find ourselves buying those veggies and fruits that we have had trouble growing this season. There are successful family farms at the Market that bring all kinds of good garden treats. We have two watermelon suppliers, and along with the melons our available fruits include cantaloupe, peaches, pears, and tomatoes. The vegetable suppliers are bringing in beautiful squash, onions, corn, okra, eggplant, black-eyed peas, cucumbers, potatoes and much much more. The business is fast and furious with our shoppers who know exactly what they want. It starts at 9:00 and our experienced shoppers show up early and leave with bags full of the earthly bounty that our farmers supply. For the causal shoppers we have a lot of arts and crafts and many salsa, jams and jellies to check out. I also like to mention Gold Stripe coffee and our bakers and pastry chefs. We have outstanding fresh baked goods. Believe me I have tasted them!
We have the occasional group that might wander through our Market. We were happy to have the Lubbock Christian University Lady’s soccer team visit. Last year the National Champion Lubbock Christian University Lady’s Basketball team stopped by. Maybe this year’s Lady Chaparral soccer team will bring home a National Championship. Good luck ladies! We also had a visit from the reigning USA National Agriculture Queen. She stopped by to give her blessing and show her appreciation to our Farmer’s Market, and she spent time visiting many of our farmers and artisans.
Of course the babies and dogs were out enjoying the spectacle and we chose a sharp dressed dog named Kronos to be our Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day. He seems very pleased with himself and we say well deserved. The coming week promises slightly cooler temperatures and maybe even some rain. Let’s keep our fingers crossed as this cool spell with rain would be wonderful for all the farmers in our area, not to mention our vendors who will continue to bring their weekly harvest to the Lubbock Downtown Farmer’s Market for you. Come by 19th and Buddy Ave. between 9:00 and 1:00 on Saturday to shop for all your produce and fruit.
And now for our vendor highlight of the week! Nidal Kanani and his wife Teri have come to our market for the first time with Nadal’s beautiful fresh yeast rolls, and many flavors of bread. Originally from Jordan, Nidal has been baking for many years and has just now started up his cottage industry. He uses only the finest virgin olive oil from Tunisia, and fresh herbs for his creations. His method is the old fashioned way, with double rises and slow acting yeast, and the results are tantilizing! After one bite, you’ll agree with their company’s name REMEMBER ME BAKERY
We would like to thank everyone who came to the August 13th market and we hope to see you back here next Saturday!
