Market Review Sept 10, 2022
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
It was obvious that the Market faced some stiff competition this week. There was the Texas Tech home game, which kicked off at 3:00. Also, the annual Garden and Arts Crafts show, a huge event, took some of our vendors and shoppers. We looked smaller in vendor numbers with fewer shoppers, but it was pretty busy despite these other draws. We are seeing more vendor events and markets here in Lubbock and in the surrounding areas. I might be a little prejudiced, but we must give credit to The Lubbock Downtown Farmer’s Market, which started with humble beginnings and was the first of its kind in the area. Larry Simmons, Tony Greer, and their support team were the ones that got it started and nurtured it for years. It has been a model for those that have followed.
Despite the competition we had a good Market with some of those football fans stopping by to support us. We had a Junior League Boxing/Mixed Martial Arts Tournament in town and the weigh-ins were held at The Garden. We had a few of these young fighters and their families stroll the Market and we were happy to have them. A couple from Roswell stopped by my booth and we had a nice chat. There are always new people and out of town visitors that help to keep things fresh. The day was pleasantly cool and the winds were calm. The morning went quickly and even with the smaller turn out I think our vendors all got some business and seemed to enjoy yet another Market.
We are counting down to the final Market only weeks away and we will continue to have great produce and fruits from our local growers. Our bakers and pastry chefs are very popular with our shoppers and the arts and crafts vendors always come through with interesting displays of what they create for the public. We cater to those of you who support local businesses and appreciate the markets and vendors who show up with their wares.
We also cater to our four legged friends with doggie treats and a fresh water bowl. To show our appreciation to the dogs that stop by with their owners we honor one dog as the Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day. Charlie gets the nod this week. Congratulations to Charlie!
The Market season seems to fly by. Here we are in mid September! We hope that as the seasons begin to change and the cooler weather sets in that you will come out and experience the atmosphere and support our local businesses that help to keep the Lubbock Downtown Farmer’s Market a place to visit and support. We are open from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturdays. We are located at 19th and Buddy Holly Ave.
Our highlighted vendor this week is PROFESSOR PICKLE! Josh Cruz really is a Professor of Education at Texas Tech, and this is the second year he and his wife Stephanie Allen have been vendors at our Market. The beginnings of their business came about by them needing to put up the bounty of cucumbers grown in their backyard. Josh played around with different recipes, and created his own variation. The flavors of pickles they produce are sweet, dill, and habanero, all organic! If they don’t grow enough of their own cucumbers, they buy from another local grower, not the store! They also make fair trade vanilla extract, cajun seasoning, and fruit shrubs. What’s that, you ask? Well, it a mixture of wine vinegar, sugar and fruit that can be used for mixed drinks or a drizzle for desserts. All very tasty! Samples are available. Check it out!
We would like to Thank everyone who attended this market and we hope to see you next week!
