Market Review Sept. 24, 2022
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
We are approaching the end of the Market season and with that comes stiff competition from football. The University of Texas was in town for the much anticipated opener for Big 12 competition. If you don’t know by now Tech won in overtime 37-34. Also we had The South Plains Fair open last week and we knew that would influence the turnout. It felt like an autumn day with the morning cool and breezy. All the vendors tucked themselves close together with high hopes that we would have a nice turnout. And we did!
At the end of the Market I think most vendors were happy with the foot traffic and sales. We had quite a few Long Horn fans in the shopping crowd, and they helped to bolster the number of shoppers. We appreciate our visiting shoppers and appreciate anybody who points them our way. There were pumpkins galore. It is the end of the growing season and we are happy our farmer’s are still bringing in wonderful produce from their area farms. GRUB (Growing Recruits For Urban Business) was back for the first time this year with their harvest. This is a Lubbock Food Bank project that helps our community youth experience farm life and be paid while doing it. The Carol Lanier Farm was established in 1988 and deserves recognition for all the good things that they do.
There were a few new vendors and the tried and true regulars who show up every week. The kids and dogs showed up as usual and each week we choose a dog to honor as Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day. Today we choose Simon who seemed to enjoy the Information Booth where doggie treats and cool water is available for all our canine friends.
We will continue to bring you great produce, baked goods and arts and crafts for the next 3 weekends. Our last Market will be on Oct.15. Please make a point to stop by 19th and Buddy Holly Ave. between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm on Saturdays and support the Lubbock Downtown Farmer’s Market.
Our highlighted new vendor this week is TEA 2 TALK ABOUT. Lora Lee Van brings her various flavored green and chai teas to the market, and offers samples for passersby. There are too many flavors to list (see photo), but there is something for everyone, including sugar free choices. This is the first year Lora added tea to her other business Shop the Vans, which is an online only clothing and accessories boutique. Lora is very pleased with the reception she has received at the market this year, and her booth seems quite popular.
Our next market is October 1st from 9:00AM to 1:00PM at 19th Street & Buddy Holly Ave. We hope to see you there!
