LDFM May 27th Market Review
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
Let’s start with a flashback to September/October 2022 at the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market. The construction on 19th St. continued endlessly. Our vendor numbers had dropped drastically. Food trucks and coffee vendors had disappeared. There was a general sense of loss and perhaps the end of fourteen continuous years of a very successful market. Fast forward to Saturday May 27th 2023. It was like Popeye, almost done in by Brutus, sucking a mouthful of spinach through his trusty pipe and becoming the musclebound super sailor that is indestructible. Boom! “ I yam what I yam. And that’s all that I yam”! The move to Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts turned the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market back into a thriving market with over 45 vendors including food trucks.
The word of our move to LHUCA got out and moved quickly through social media. The AJ chipped in to let it’s reader know. Radio and TV media promoted the market and it’s new location. It was like the old saying “Build it and they will come” brought to life. WOW! Just WOW! A wet morning did not stop the vendors from showing up with our old sense of community; of love for each other and what we all have to contribute. The shoppers swarmed the plaza like none of us could believe. Come they did! Hundreds of people. Many, who as far as I could tell, had never once come to the LDFM at our Buddy Holly Ave. location. It was fantastic! Families galore. Old friends seeing one another and reconnecting with hugs and handshakes. It was like an impromptu party rose up from nowhere. It was busy and fast paced. Vendors had no time to sit and look at their phones. Shoppers crowded to each and every vendors booth with cash and cards ready to purchase everything that our vendors had to offer. It was truly an amazing beginning for us as we start a new era for the LDFM.
The morning and early afternoon remained cloudy and cool. Jackets and sweatshirts were in fashion. We had plenty of our furry friends on leashes that stopped by our information booth for a free doggie treat, and we even had two pygmy boa constrictors and an iguana that lent to the circus atmosphere. Our pet friendly market has always honored our pets and their owners by declaring one dog as the Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Week. We celebrate our first winner of the season. Say hell-o to Presley who took home the honor. Congratulations Presley!
What a wonderful market day we had. Speaking to the vendors after the market was great! All of our vendors wore smiles, and the successful market put us in the frame of mind that we will all thrive in our new location. We want to thank all our vendors for sticking with us through the hard times, and of course thank you to all the people who showed up to support the LDFM. A special thanks to all the social media posts, the AJ and radio and television stations who got the word out. We are refreshed and ready! We are ready to serve our customers each and every Saturday from now until mid October. As we move into the late spring and summer the produce will increase and we hope we will continue to add more vendors. We look forward to serving our many visitors as they support our Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market located at the LHUCA on 5th and Ave. J. Come and see what all the excitement is about!
We also like to highlight new vendors to the market, and this week we are tipping our hat to LITTLE SPRIG FARM. Olivia and Daniel Stanfield of Plainview have been a staple at the Wolfforth Market the last couple of years, and they have decided to expand their exposure by joining us as well. Offering hand made goat’s milk soaps and lotions, this couple is the real deal in that they raise and milk their own goats for their products. The catalyst for making their own soap was Olivia’s sensitive skin upon moving to our dry West Texas climate. After going through the learning curve, they have created products that soothe and moisturize dry skin. Little Sprig also offers their chemical free produce throughout the season. Now they have radishes, kale, collards, and garlic tops. Up and coming will be tomatoes, zucchini, squash, and cantaloupe. Oh boy! Welcome to Olivia and Daniel!
Thank you for coming out and supporting the LDFM and we hope to see you next week Saturday for the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market on the LHUCA Plaza (5th Street & Avenue J) from 9:00AM until 1:00PM!
