The Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market, the original and still the best market for locally grown produce returns to downtown Lubbock on Saturday July 29th from 9:00 Am to 1:00 PM and every Saturday through October 14th.
After 14 years located in the Depot District, the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market has moved to the Downtown Arts District! This season we have relocated to the plaza behind the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts at 511 Avenue K. We will also have vendors set up on 5th Street between Avenue K & Avenue J. This move provides a more scenic environment and a more enjoyable shopping experience for our market shoppers and vendors.
Visit the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market this Saturday, July 29th at our NEW LOCATION in the LHUCA PLAZA (5th St & Ave J) from 9:00AM to 1:00PM for a taste of downtown Lubbock, and the finest in local produce, meat, baked goods and arts. We are excited to be located in the thriving downtown arts district and hope to see all of our loyal shoppers in this new location.
MARKET REVIEW JULY 22, 2023
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
Dawn seemed to have a golden hue. There were dark clouds to the south and scattered clouds over Lubbock. After a week of triple digit temperatures the weekend forecast was for temperatures in the mid to high 90’s. Our regular vendors have found their permanent spots on the Plaza, so set up has become very orderly and quick. Vendors know where to go upon arrival and this has created a community attitude that has us working and feeling like a team. The LHUCA Plaza has really become our home!
Our vendor count was good, as some vendors returned after participating in other events the previous Saturday. Competition from other events was very high again with Sip and Shop, Queen Mab’s Flower Market and the Broadway hit show Hamilton all hoping for big crowds. I am happy to say that we had a very steady flow of shoppers despite the stiff competition. I encountered a young lady visiting from Washington D.C. She was visiting her grandmother who is confined to a wheelchair. She commented that the wheelchair friendly Plaza was why they chose our Market. That made me feel really good!
The fresh produce was beautiful again, and several of our farmers sold out early. Tomatoes, yellow squash, onions, eggplant, cucumbers, carrots all types of greens and mushrooms too. Colorado peaches are in and they were leaving the Market by the box load! The shoppers we are seeing are a mix of the regulars and brand new visitors every week. Our regulars know the lay out and they know what they are there for. Some are quick to come and go others make a nice long visit part of the morning. Both the old and new folks are quick to comment on the Plaza and how much they enjoy and appreciate our new spot.
The morning went by quickly, as they all seem to do. There were families with strollers and lots of kids. We have friends shopping together. There is a constant buzz of conversations between customers and vendors. This is what goes on weekly at the Market.
And dogs! We provide treats and clean water to keep them safe and happy! We love to have our furry companions visit the Market! We award one dog the title of Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day. We are happy to present to you, Ernie our special dog guest of the day! Atta boy Ernie!
Now that summer is in full swing the gardens are producing, and our Market is a great place to find farm fresh foods for you and your family. We hope you will give us a try and check out, not only the produce, but all the bakers and sauce makers too! We must mention our artisans as well. We have lots of special arts and crafts vendors who bring wonderful wares to the Market every week. Stop by and see what the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market has to offer from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm every Saturday at 5th and Ave. J.
And for this week’s vendor highlight, we bring you…SHANIA’S CREATIVE CRAFTS! Shania Wright creates so many different things! Resin is currently her favorite medium, from which she makes (get ready) custom dog tags, badge reels, containers, trays, shot glasses, lighter covers, cups, key chains, pressed flower coasters, and domino sets. She also has pot holders, dish towels, stickers, paintings, bookmarks, and metal wrapped stones. I’m sure I’m leaving out some items, but you get the idea. Shania gets her creative flair from her mom, and so has been crafting a long time! She has had her business since 2021, but this is her first year at our market. Stop by and you’ll be sure to find something for you or a friend! She is custom making a bumper sticker for me!
Thank you for supporting the LDFM. We hope to see you next Saturday at 5th Street & Avenue J from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM at the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market on the LHUCA Plaza.
