Market Review August 12th

By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates

Upon arrival I noticed that a line of people was forming at the Icehouse Gallery across the street from our Market…August Blue T-Shirts was holding a sale event. Before long the line was around the corner. I have stated before that on any given Saturday there might be three or four competing markets. But in this case we had many of those shoppers stop by to see what was happening in the LHUCA Plaza. Even though our vendor count was down a bit, the influx of shoppers from August Blue created an early rush of shoppers that certainly helped out. Hopefully we won some of those visitors over, and they will come back to see us again.

The forecast was for a very hot day and we expected this to be a factor in the overall Market. I feel like the early surge was a real saving grace as we watched the number of shoppers drop quickly as the morning turned to afternoon. We have heat aids with free bottled water, plenty of shade, and air conditioned Art Galleries to take shelter in. Our early bird visitors scoop up the farm fresh produce quickly and they are our most treasured shoppers. We see plenty of folks bring shopping bags, knowing exactly who they are doing repeat business with on a weekly basis. They fill their bags and leave happy. “Shop early” is very good advise.

Colorado peaches are quite a favorite with customers leaving with box loads. We are seeing great produce and our farmers are selling out weekly. Come and see all the fruits and vegetables we have to offer. We always have new vendors with new products. Inspector’s Choice Barbecue Sauce and R & J Enterprises with fresh quail eggs made their debut.

The Market was pretty normal with friends bumping into friends, and families with kids making the rounds. I see more and more new faces which is exactly what we are hoping for. We are upping our game in the animal department with our weekly Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day contest. We had several Great Danes at the Market, but none more handsome than Maverick! And lo and behold we had our first Tornado Industrial/Arts Bird of the Day. What a beautiful bird you are Elizabeth.

Thanks for stopping by. We hope that you will join us next week and bring a shopping bag for all the wonderful products you can carry out. We also have two wineries represented. Plenty of specialty bakers and Arts and Crafts galore. Stop by the LHUCA  Plaza on Saturday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm to see what a wonderful Market we have created for you.

We’d like to tell you more about our new vendor R & J ENTERPRISES. Ronald and Jan Kinney come not only with fresh quail eggs (with a special quail cutting egg tool available), but also an array of pickled quail egg choices…from sweet to hot. Try a sample! They started raising quail about a year ago, and have @ 200 birds now. Ronald has a lot of information to share about quail breeds ( theirs is Coturnix), and you can arrange to get quail meat from them also. Jan brings her jewelry creations, with lots of pretty beaded bracelets in varying styles. One type I found interesting was Kumihimo, which is Japanese for gathered threads. I bought one as a gift (for me?).

We would like to thank everyone who came to the market and we hope to see you next week at the LDFM on the LHUCA Plaza at 5th Street & Avenue J from 9:00AM until 1:00PM!
