Market Review August 26th
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
We found ourselves setting up in Charles Adams Studio Project courtyard for the second week in a row. We are very appreciative to have this alliance with CASP, which sure makes our lives easier. The Lubbock Live Music Festival had their annual fund raiser event in the LHUCA Plaza, so we gladly moved across the street for our fourteenth Market of the season. Our vendor numbers were good, and the CASP courtyard was full of eager vendors ready for the Market. During set up there is always a lot of chatter and laughter as vendors greet and assist each other as we get ready for the day. The set up went well and the shoppers showed up in a steady stream.
We were happy to welcome our Texas Tech students back to the city for the fall semester. I spoke with several students who are excited to be back in the Hub City, and we appreciate them coming out and supporting our Market. What I like most are the smiles. Tons of smiles. Happy people selling and shopping all together. If you want to be in a happy place for a few hours on a Saturday morning we can guarantee our Market is the place to be. Heck who wouldn’t be happy with all the great fresh produce available. The regular shoppers come equipped with large shopping bags and leave carrying loads of tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, squash, okra, black eyed peas, and so much more. The Colorado peaches are one the most sought after items at the Market, and I can testify that they are delicious!
Our artists and craftsmen are also eager to show their goods, and we encourage folks to consider shopping for any upcoming occasion that might require gifting. One of a kind handmade gifts are always special. We have two wine vendors who have a variety of local wines and samples for you to taste. With the triple digit temperatures subsiding a bit we noticed that the quick exit of shoppers was minimal as people showed up late into the morning and early afternoon. As we continue into the late summer we are hopeful that we see friendlier temperatures that vendors and shoppers alike would appreciate.
We are a dog friendly event and there were plenty of dogs enjoying the Market. We award one special dog the title of Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day. This week we are happy to introduce you to Molly. I told you our Market is a happy place as you can plainly see by Molly’s expression. With only seven Markets remaining we encourage you to stop by and experience the fun. We will return to the LHUCA Plaza next Saturday and look forward to seeing you there. We are located at 5th and Ave. J and open from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.
We are always impressed by how many creative people there are out there! Meet Brianna Strange and Nathan Swain with STEM & STONE WEARABLE BOTANICALS. They’ve had their company around 6 months, so this is their first season with our market. Brianna says she started making jewelry around 6 years ago, by accident, when it was offered as an art class in high school. She loved it! There is a wide variety of earrings, necklaces, bracelets and rings to choose from, all designed and custom made by Brianna! She also has lathe turned wooden vases made by her and her dad. Nathan’s specialty is graphic design. He has prints available, as well as some of his own jewelry. Come see what these young artists are creating!
We really appreciate everyone who supports the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market and thanks to everyone who came out to the August 26th farmers market. We will relocate back to our normal location at the LHUCA Plaza for the September 2nd market. We hope to see you next Saturday at 5th Street and Avenue J from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM at the LDFM at the LHUCA Plaza!
