Market Review Sept. 2 2023
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
September is here and with it comes the Labor Day weekend and opening day for college football, which always seem to affect our vendor count and foot traffic. But have no fear, we pulled it off and had another successful Market! Many people travel during this weekend, and we get our fair share of out of town visitors. This weekend we welcomed a family from Waco here for a reunion. Also we had folks visiting from Albany, Windthorst and our close neighbor Earth, Texas. It’s always great to have conversations with visiting shoppers, and we encourage our local folks to send visitors our way on a Saturday morning.
Even with a reduced Market we saw a steady stream of people coming and going. Texas Tech is back in session, so we are seeing an increase of young students checking our Market out, and we are happy to have them back in Lubbock. We hope to see more students in the next month and a half we have left in this Market season. Welcome back Tech!
We are still in the hot summer days, so early bird shopping is recommended. We expect to see more and more fresh produce as the weather cools and harvest season continues. We had great news from our Colorado Peach vendor saying that we will have two more weeks of great peaches before the end of their season. We are still seeing beautiful tomatoes, onions, squash, okra, corn, black-eyed peas, canned goods and so much more. Our artists continue to bring their special crafts for great gift selections for all occasions. We have bakers with cookies, breads, muffins, empanadas and other tasty treats. We also had great things in the kids corner at this Market with very clever Fruit Loops bird feeders that the kids made themselves, and the always entertaining Mr. Kent and his spin art. We always have free suckers and stickers for all the children young and old. We love seeing families at the Market.
With only six more Markets left in the season we hope to see you soon. This also means we only have six more Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day. This week Sasha showed up and took home the prize of Dog of the Day. Congratulations Sasha!
We are all amazed at how time flies and hope that the remaining Markets will be vendor heavy and provide fun for all our shoppers and causal strollers. We appreciate each and every one of you who attend and make our Market successful. We hope you will wander down our way at 5th and Ave. J on Saturday mornings from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm in the Plaza at the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts.
As mentioned, we have a variety of baked goods available, and this week we’d like to welcome Marcie Baugh with MRS. M’S MORSELS. She is a newcomer to our Market, selling her baked goods for about a month now commercially. Marcie grew up baking with her grandma, worked in a bakery, and decided to try a commercial venture! She offers a wide variety of muffins, including peanut butter chocolate, blueberry, cinnamon, banana, and pumpkin. There are cookies, like chocolate snickerdoodle & oatmeal chocolate chip. Marcie also makes an ancient grain banana bread using maple syrup instead of processed sugar, and peach or apple pie biscuits (who has ever heard of that?) There are keto and gluten free choices as well, so really something for everyone! Come and support her creative endeavors!
We would like to thank everyone who came out to the September 2nd market and hope to see you next week at the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market in the LHUCA Plaza from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM at 5th Street & Avenue J.
