Market Review Sept. 30
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
We had a beautiful morning for our Market. It was a bit breezy, and that had our vendors making sure they had plenty of weights on their canopies. We have seen reduced numbers of vendors and shoppers the past two weeks due to The South Plains Fair. We had our Red Raiders hosting the Houston Cougars for an afternoon game and that also had an impact on our Market.
But the show must go on, so when the curtains went up at 9:00 am we were ready to greet those who visited our Market. No matter what competition we have on Saturdays we put up our tents and greet those shoppers who come out to support us. We had visitors from Austin and New Braunfels, and a couple visiting all the way from Clarksville, Tennessee. We had a nice stream of regulars and new shoppers that kept the vendors busy through the morning. However, as the football game kick off time approached we saw a quick drop off of shoppers.
When our numbers are down we have a slower paced Market, which seems to allow for more inspection of goods and conversation between vendors and shoppers. That’s a good thing, as one of the best parts of being a vendor are the conversations that come about during the Market time. We had our farmers with their fresh produce, which flies off the shelf and really helps to keep our regular shoppers coming back week after week. Our bakers bring their fresh home baked goods and our canners always do well as shoppers seek out their favorite salsas and canned goods. Our artisans and boutique owners are ready to show their wares for any gift occasion as gift giving season quickly approaches.
We never forget to embrace our dog friends by awarding one furry friend our Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day. Meet “Z”! He was happy to be at the Market and we were happy he was there to win the honor of Dog of the Day. We are coming to the end of our Market season with only two weekends left… October 14th will be our last one…and we are hopeful that with your attendance we will have a strong finish. We hope you will make a point of stopping by and supporting all the vendors who have helped to make this year’s Market successful and fun. We will be ready next Saturday, when once again the curtain will go up at 9:00 am in the LHUCA Plaza located at 5th and Ave. J.
This week our new vendor spotlight shines on two crafty ladies with TALK DIRT TO ME. Donna Ramirez and Kenzee Spruiell are a mother/daughter duo who are bringing all sorts of homemade crafts our way. Most of what they create is nature and plant related, and they say they are part crow because of their love of shiny things. Donna is retired from both the banking business and being a licensed nursery manager, so she is enjoying the time to create. Her daughter Kenzee still works full time, but says this business gives them something they can do together. You will find a wide array of handmade wreaths, keychains, beaded hangings, magnets, hair combs, necklaces, macrame hangings, and even some plants for sale (I bought an aloe vera). Come support these new comers to our market!
Thank you to everyone who came to our market and we hope to see you next week at the LDFM on the LHUCA Plaza from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM at 5th Street & Avenue J!
