Market Review October 7th
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
The cold front blew in with gusto on Friday night, and cooled us down as we said good-bye to the summer heat. It was down right chilly as we set up for the Market with temperatures in the mid 40’s! Our vendor count was about the same as we’ve had for the past two weeks. The late season Markets have seen a reduction in the vendor and shopper numbers, but we continue to put up our canopies and serve those that come out and support our Market.
Eager shoppers showed up wearing jackets and hoodies and they seemed to be enjoying the cooler weather. The morning warmed steadily, and the foot traffic slowly increased as the temperatures rose. Many of our regulars showed up, along with quite a few new folks. We had visitors from Austin, Idaho, and Missouri, and some transplants to Lubbock from Phoenix and internationally from Turkey. Welcome to West Texas! I personally had some very interesting conversations with these first time shoppers.
Our Kids Corner supplied mini pumpkins for the kids to decorate and take home, and our Information Booth passed our suckers for kids of all ages. We had plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables to offer. Our shoppers filled their bags with tomatoes, carrots, peppers, black-eyed peas, cucumbers, eggplant and they carried out watermelons and cantaloupe! We had The Happy Kitchen preparing samples of delicious squash recipes for our shoppers to try. We always appreciate free samples and new recipes to try.
Urban Market was showing off their Microgreens including purple radish, dill, cilantro, red beet and red cabbage. There were a variety of spices and sauces, and canned goods galore. Our home bakers are bringing great baked goods and pastries including soft bagels, baklava, cookies, pumpkin and banana nut breads, just to mention a few. Our Market is a great place to shop for arts and crafts as well. We have handmade jewelry, knitted items, boutique items and wonderfully crafted cutting boards.
We always have dogs that enjoy our Market, and we award one of them the title of Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day. The winner takes home a bright red bandana as a prize. We had Milo sporting his new bandana and we say congratulations to Milo! We only have one more Market to go so we hope you will stop by to check things out and support our small businesses. We are located in the LHUCA Plaza at 5th and Ave. J.
Speaking of home bakers, we’d like to welcome B. MARIA’S HOMEMADE! Originally from Turkey (the country, not the town in Texas), Ayse Egridag creates delicious Turkish goodies. You will find fresh, soft bagels, decadently sweet baklava, and vine leaves stuffed with rice, tomato paste, and spices. Ayse started out by just loving to cook these items and more, and was encouraged by friends to sell her special items to the public. Her husband Russ is helping her out by tending their booth at our market while she tends to other events. Come down and give it a try (samples are available). They are also available on Instagram.
Thank you for coming out to our market and we hope to see you next week at our final market of the 2023 season for the LDFM on the LHUCA Plaza (5th & Ave. J) from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM.
