Market Review 5/25/2024
by Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
Here we go again! We kicked off the 2024 Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market with over 50 vendors, many of them new! We gathered in the LUCHA plaza early for set up. It was like the first day back at school. Our regular vendors were greeting each other after a long absence from one another, and catching up on how our old friends have been doing. Our new vendors were feeling their way through their initial set up and meeting the old timers. There is a family atmosphere that helps to bring us all together as we lend each other a helping hand and a welcoming smile.
The weather was warm and breezy, but our area in the LUCHA plaza helps to block the wind, and there are trees and shaded seating areas that help to make this spot a comfortable place to have our weekly Market. The shoppers arrived on time and filled the plaza as we opened for business at 9:00 am sharp. The plaza becomes a bustling area with folks chatting with other shoppers and getting to know our vendors and the wares that they are presenting for sale. We had a great selection of produce even though we are still early in the spring growing season. Bakers galore with breads and pastries to choose from. If you need house plants to fill your house we have them. We had artisans with all types of handmade jewelry, crocheted items, cutting boards, leather goods and so much more. Our small business owners show an incredible variety of art and crafts that are suitable for gifts for all occasions. We have jellies and jams, salsa, assorted mustards, and homemade spices. Local wines are available as well.
We are happy to have several food trucks to choose from this year, and invite you to come out for a snack or a lunch time meal. This year we will have a monthly Kids Korner with special events and things for children to participate in. And let’s not forget that our Market is pet friendly. We encourage our shoppers to bring their dogs or cats or reptiles with them. We even have the Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day award for our favorite dog. We were happy to have Boola start the 2024 season off as our Dog of the Day. Congratulations Boola! We are excited about our Market in our second year at the LUCHA Plaza located at 5th and Ave. J and invite you to stop by between 9:00 and 1:00 every Saturady to shop and meet our vendors who are there to serve you and present a wide variety of goods.
