Market Review June 8th 2024
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
I want to start this review out on the First Friday Art Trail. It was hot and windy (a vendors worst nightmare) and very busy. Vendors set up sometimes as early as 2:00 in the afternoon braving the elements, and then break down after 9:00. Believe me it is a tough gig with wind and heat and hundreds of people milling around. I mention this because we have at least 7 or 8 vendors who do both the FFAT and then get up early on Saturday morning and do it all over again at our Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market. Just a special thanks to those dedicated vendors who do double duty on the first weekend of the month. Bravo!
The wind continued to blow on Saturday morning, but we set up in our protected Plaza at LHUCA with over 30 vendors present. The sun was out and the morning turned very warm as shoppers began to file in at 9:00 sharp. Last week our shoppers numbers were low due to stiff competition from West Texas Comic Con, so we saw an uptick in the number of attenddees to our Market this week. I heard several vendors comment on the difference. That is just the nature of the game. It can be like a roller coaster with sharp ups and downs from one week to the next. One thing I did notice at this Market was the amount of first time visitors. We depend on new shoppers and appreciate those that come out just to see what our Market offers. Several of the new shoppers were new to our area, and we had people from Washington D.C., Minnesota, Nebraska, and Colorado. It is always fun for me to find out what brings them to Lubbock. Of course, we also saw our regulars who enjoy shopping or just milling around the plaza and chatting with all the friendly people.
Please note that we have all types of produce, pastries, salsas and jams. Great artisans and small business people to chat with as you inspect the goods they bring to our weekly Market. There is always great food and interesting gift selctions to keep you busy for a couple hours on a Saturday morning. Our family friendly Market is a great place to venture to. We are also happy to see our dog owners bring their best friends out and we honor them with the weekly Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day Award. The winner receives a Red Bandana to show all their friends. This week Gus won the prize as Dog of the Day! You can tell he can’t wait to put it around his neck. Good boy Gus!
We hope that you will come out and visit, and encourage your friends and family to do the same. We are located at 5th and Ave. J, and we are here every Saturday from 9:00 am til 1:00 pm.
Featured Vendor : FIONA’S DARN FRICKIN’ GOOD PECANS!
As you faithful followers of our review know, we like to spotlight one new vendor a week. This time it’s Natalie Stone, with her spiced pecans that she calls FIONA’S DARN FRICKIN’ GOOD PECANS! She started making her pecans as Christmas gifts, and just this year has brought them to the public. With her unique spice blend, including cinnamon, cardamon, sugar, and a touch of cayenne (there’s more, but we don’t want to give away her secrets) the nuts have a nice balance of flavor. So give this young entrepeneur a visit, and do some gift giving of your own!
We hope to see you next Saturday at the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market on the LHUCA plaza!
