Market Review June 15th
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
There was a large cloud bank to the east of Lubbock on Saturday morning that blocked the sun and made for a cool, shady set up. The wind was calm, which is just what a vendor hopes for. With these ideal conditions, we readied ourselves for the fourth Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market of the year. We had close to 40 vendors this week. There was a lot going on Saturday with Mo’s Market, The Haboob Festival at Two Doc’s, and the 806 Block Party at CASP.
Our vendor turn out was really good considering the number of events happening in the same general area. Some of our vendors even did double duty taking on two events in one day! Our shoppers began to show up right at 9:00, and continued steadily throughout the morning…we are always so appreciative when there is such good attendance! Our Kid’s Corner put together a scavenger hunt for the kids and it turned out great. The kids were given a sheet of paper with pictures of different items that could be found at the Market. The object was for the children to get a sticker from vendors to place on the square designated for each item. When they found all the items and got the sticker, they received a token to be used to purchase something from the Market. It got the kids involved and we all had fun interacting with those who played the game.
We see so many first time shoppers and have great conversations with people who are not only new to the Market, but new to Lubbock. I met a mom and her 5 children who recently arrived from Central California. I also spoke with a student at Tech and her mom visiting from Albuquerque. Our famers are bringing nice produce, with lots of leafy greens, squash, zucchini, onions, tomatoes, with more coming as the growing season continues. Local wines are available for purchase, and a variety of flavored teas also. Pastries including cookies, muffins, brownies and baklava. There are bakers providing assorted breads. We have salsas, jams, and local honey too!
It was a great dog day with what seemed to be more dogs than usual. It was a beautiful thing to see. We always choose one outstanding dog to honor as Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day and this week Angus was our favorite canine. We have so much to offer our shoppers and invite you to visit and see all the wonderful arts and crafts and foods that are available from our small business owners. Take an hour or two and come out to The Plaza at the LHUCA at 5th and Ave. J between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm every Saturday.
Featured Vendor: RISING A RANCH
This week, our highlighted new vendor is RISING A RANCH. This family run ranch, located between Tahoka and Post, is home to 100% grass fed, pasture raised Longhorn cattle. Tim and Danielle Arthur have been raising cattle for about 12 years, but this is their first year to bring them to market. I was amazed to learn that the Longhorn is one of the healthiest beefs you can eat, as it is leaner with fewer calories. Their testimonial was the story of how Danielle was suffering from gout, and it completely went away after they switched to eating the Longhorn. RISING A RANCH also offers farm raised pork, which is free from hormones, steroids, and antibiotics. They offer various bulk package options, and there’s even some yummy baked goods on the table. For those who care about the quality of meat they buy, this vendor is for you!
