Market Review July 27th
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
West Texas summer mornings are invigorating! We met in the cool LHUCA Plaza for set up. When I arrived there seemed to be quite a few vendors missing from our usual line up. As the clock ticked closer to the opening bell several of our vendors showed up much like a student sprinting into the class room just as the tardy bell sounded off. Better late than never as they say. We had around 30 vendors for our Market and we were happy with that. The shoppers arrived slowly, but continued to find their way into the Market area throughout the morning. I was told that there was a huge garage sale type Market in Wolfforth which probably affected our Market and the one in Wolfforth. But onward and upward we went as the morning progressed.
We had a family reunion visit us, and also a group of Bridesmaids with their identifying sashes reading “Bride’s Tribe” which turned a few heads as we sent out best wishes to the Bride! There seemed to be quite a few families out with plenty of young children experiencing the magic of our Farmers Market. We always enjoy the kids and offer free suckers and stickers to help them feel they are at a special event.
The usual assortment of first time shoppers and veterans was apparent, and we say thank you to each and every one of our shoppers. Our produce vendors are bringing in more and more fruits and vegetables to choose from, including tomatoes, which are always a favorite item. There’s also squash, onions, beets, peppers, okra, eggplant, fresh greens, and more! We offer fresh fruits like peaches, cherries, cantaloupes, and watermelons. From our bakers we have a variety of sourdough breads, cookies, pies, soft bagels, baklava, cinnamon rolls and flat bread. While we are listing food items, let’s mention salsas, jams, all sorts of pickled and canned foods. You have a sweet tooth? We have homemade candy and cotton candy made on the spot. We have locally produced beef and homemade beef jerky that comes in assorted flavors. We always have plenty of vendors who bring their handmade crafts, like jewelry, crocheted items, art work, and we added an award winning clay potter to our vendors list this week.
The morning warmed quickly, as to be expected this time of year, and the flow of shoppers slowed as the heat rose. We always encourage early shopping. We have completed the first 10 weeks of our Market and will hit the midway mark next week. Our Market will continue through the summer with our final Market of the year being on Oct. 19th. We hope that if you have not stopped by yet you will find a weekend or two to visit us as we continue through the summer months.
We also love having our dog owners bring their best friends out for a stroll and we honor one dog each week to be our Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day. Meet Bentley! He will receive our Market Red Bandana to show off to all his friends and we thank Bentley for coming out and brightening our day!
We still have plenty of Markets left this season and hope that you will mark your list of things to do to include a visit to the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market. We are located at 5th and Ave. J. from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm every Saturday morning. We hope to see you there.
FEATURED VENDOR: Zoey Watson
As mentioned, we include in our list of new vendors a pottery maker. Meet Zoey Watson,an eighteen year old who has already won cash awards and a scholorship for her pottery. She started learning from David Echols, the art teacher at Frendship High School, and fell in love with the process. Zoey says that creating pottery is a great stress reliever for her, and lots of fun! She currently is producing her wares at the Clay Studio at LHUCA, and has so many pieces she thought she would try her hand at selling them. She has received the Robert Ellis Patterson Art Award from LHUCA, as well as the National Council of Education for Ceramic Arts (NCECA) scholarship, so come down and encorage this young lady by picking up one of her pieces!
Thank you to everyone who visited the July 27th market and we hope to see you next week at the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market on the LHUCA Plaza.
