Market Review Aug. 17th
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
With Saturday’s forecast of 103, we were prepared for the worst. The winds were calm, and the sky was clear. Our set up went well, and we had our usual 30 vendors. Our shoppers showed up early, and got right to the business at hand, which is shopping! The fall semester at Tech starts this week and I spoke with a couple of people here helping their children get ready for their new home at Texas Tech. We had people visiting from Houston, Pennsylvania, and Iredell, Texas. We had a family from Carlsbad stop by saying they were staying in a downtown motel, and our easy access location prompted them to check us out. They left with a bag full of goodies too!
Our shoppers were steady through the morning, and it seemed that our vendors did well… especially our new vendor selling lemonade! We had our Kids Corner in full swing. Each child got their own water bottle, and an assortment of stickers for them to personalize them. We enjoy having families out, and having activities for the Kids just enhances the experience.
Here’s a quick note I must mention…Although we have a wheelchair friendly surface in the Plaza, we had a multi-level situation that left our wheelchair shoppers unable to access vendors on our top level. The good people at LHUCA saw the need for a ramp and bought one! Now all of our shoppers have full access to all of our vendors! Thank you LHUCA!
We are still happy to see great fruit and produce coming in. Along with the usual tomatoes, squash and okra, we are seeing more cantaloupe, watermelon, potatoes, okra, black-eyed peas, and now local apples! We have baked goods galore, and canned and pickled goods too. Pasture fed beef and homemade beef jerky! Take advantage of our food selections by doubling your SNAP dollars. For gifts and personal use we have arts and crafts, jewelry, homemade soaps and lotions.
If you are just out for a stroll and want to see some beautiful dogs, we have them too! We honor one dog every week as Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day and this week we are happy to introduce you to Lake. He was found wandering by a nearby lake and his rescuers decided that would be a great name. Congratulations Lake! Please consider a visit to our Market on Saturday mornings between 9:00 and 1:00.
FEATURED VENDOR: URBAN MARKET-LBK
Our new vendor highlight this week is URBAN MARKET-LBK. They are specializing in hydroponics, specifically butter head lettuce, microgreens, spring mix, and baby basil plants. When I asked manager Maddie Carter what inspired the company, she explained that it is an offshoot of their Coop Public House and Bistro, located at 50th and Utica. The Bistro is geared toward using local and seasonal food, and owner Chris Chisholm decided to try growing their own…this way they provide greens for the restaurant year round. The business was started in 2016, but this is the first year they are bringing their greens to market. They grow mostly organically, using oregano oil and other natural remedies for pest control. So, while everyone else’s greens have long since withered, these folks can provide you with fresh, local food! Come down and give them your support!
Thank you to everyone who visited the market this week and we look forward to seeing you next week at the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market on the LHUCA Plaza.
