Market Review Aug. 24, 2024
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
The temperatures have been brutal all week, but for the third week in a row we have had a wonderful cloud cover over our Market. My route to the Market took me down Mac Davis Lane and suddenly WOW!! There was Artist B.C. Gilbert’s incredible art installation welcoming me to the Art district. The Friendly Cowboy Western Swing Band has arrived! Our lives are made better through art.
On to the Market for set up I went, and found our vendor count was up as we welcomed several newcomers. Promptly at 9:00 the flow of shoppers began, and stayed very consistent throughout the entire morning! The cloud cover burned away about noon, and the shoppers began to retreat. I think it was a very good day for vendors and shoppers alike, despite Lubbock Comic Con being held right around the corner at the Civic Center. In fact, we had a few Comic Con participants that stopped by the Market. I talked to a young man from Tennessee who was in Lubbock working on wind turbines in the area.
We had folks who have not been to a Market since we left Buddy Holly Ave… We are happy when our old customers reconnect with us! The early shoppers are getting the high demand produce, so get here early for the best shopping! We had quite a few people taking advantage of our SNAP benefits on double dollar value.
Our farmers are still bringing great fruits and vegetables. Our bakers are still baking up fresh breads and delicious pastries. And our food trucks are ready to serve you. Our artisans are in full swing and provide lots of great merchandise for gifts for all types of occasions.
We had some feline visitors this week and of course lots of dogs. This week our Tornado Industial/Arts Dog of the Day is Biggie! He looks so fine in his Red Bandana and you can tell how happy Biggie is to be Dog of the Day! We still have eight more weeks of Market, and invite you to stop by and see what we have to offer. We will surrender our normal spot next week for the Lubbock Live Music Benefit, but we will be easy to find as we will move directly across the street to the CASP area. We hope to see you there!
FEATURED VENDOR: HEAVEN SENT BOTANICAL SALVE
As mentioned, we continue to have new vendors, and this week we’d like to introduce you to George Hartfield with his HEAVEN SENT BOTANICAL SALVE. George started making his salve around three years ago in order to combat his own physical pain. He suffered from herniated discs and nerve pain, and wanted an alternative to pharmaceutical drugs. He researched and, as he says, listened to the plants to create an organic, healing salve. He has just started to make his product available to the public, and hopes others may benefit as he has from the wondrous healing qualities of plants.
We would like to thank everyone who visited the August 24th market and we hope to see you next week at the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market.
NOTE: The LDFM will move Across the street this Saturday to the area west of CASP to make room for the Lubbock Live Festival
