Market Review Sept 14th
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
This time of year the mornings are beautiful. We had a great set up Saturday with two new vendors joining the Market. This time of year also brings major competition with college football. Texas Tech’s early kickoff time certainly affected our vendor numbers and shoppers as well. There was also the 54th annual Garden and Arts Fall Festival, which always draws great crowds. But come what may we opened on time and saw that not everybody in Lubbock follows college football.
The shoppers showed up and many of them were new customers. We had visitors from Waco, Austin and Atlanta. I met a new Tech student from Bangladesh. We have quite a few parents of the college students stop by… moms and dads who are helping their kids get set up in their new town. I spoke with a new Tech faculty member who just arrived and will be teaching in the Landscape Architecture Department.
One of the best things about being a vendor is meeting and chatting with Lubbock’s new citizens. I often hear from them how friendly and welcoming our community is. And I always agree! We were treated to some beautiful music when Sarah stopped by with her dulcimer and serenaded us for about an hour. Thank you, Sarah! We hope you will come back again soon.
We are still getting great produce from our farmers and expect that the next five Markets will offer all the farm fresh fruits and vegetables that we are seeing now. Our Market has a variety of bakers with all types of bread and sweet pastries. We added a coffee vendor and nothing is better than a good cup of coffee and a breakfast pastry. No matter what gift giving occasion is coming up we have the artisans to provide handmade arts and craft for every type of celebration. We have all types of jams, salsas, pickled goods and local honey. I spoke with one new Lubbockite who had purchased some honey saying she was getting her immunities in order. Local honey is one of nature’s best medicines.
We had our weekly Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day competition and Savanah was happy to be awarded the Red Bandana. She strolled the Market for a couple of hours meeting and greeting anybody who wanted to pet her. She was great!
We have 5 more Markets and the weather will be nice and cool, so please take time to stop by the Plaza at LHUCA and spend a little time chatting and checking out all our small businesses. We appreciate all our regular shoppers and look forward to serving our brand new customers as
well.
FEATURED VENDOR: CONNECTION COFFEE
A new coffee vendor…YES! A warm welcome to CONNECTION COFFEE! And this is no ordinary coffee brewer either! Aidan Sisco is using a special brewing method that is an immersion and french press combination. The Ethiopian beans are freshly ground for each cup, then placed in the top of the coffee maker. A small amount of perfectly heated water is poured in, the grounds stirred, and they sit for a few minutes for the “bloom phase”. More water is added, and the coffee is then allowed to drip into the lower vessel. The water itself is distilled, and then minerals added to help reduce the acidity of the coffee. Wow! They are offering interesting choices as well, such as coffee soda, and coffee that has been fermented with fruit to imbue it with different flavors. We are certainly happy to have them on board!
Thank you to everyone who visited the September 14th market. We look forward to seeing you next Saturday at the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market on the LHUCA Plaza.
