Market Review Oct. 5
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
What a wonderful morning we had for our 20th Market of the year! We always assume that the First Friday Art Trail will zap our Market a little bit. Although we did see a slight drop with our vendor count, we added two new vendors to help make up the difference. We started out slow and we were a bit worried that the First Friday Jinx might do us in, but surprise surprise our Market began to fill with shoppers about 9:30. The scene got quite busy and our faithful bunch of vendors all seemed to have very good sales throughout the morning.
Tech’s football game was scheduled for a very late start and the South Plains Fair was finished, so that had a positive effect on our numbers. We continue to have out-of-towners stop in, and this week we welcomed folks from Midland, Austin and Carlsbad. We had local folks that were trying out our Market for the first time as well. I enjoy seeing the familiar faces that support our Market weekly, but having new people experience a Saturday morning in the LHUCA Plaza with us is really special.
The families were out in force and the kids always seem to enjoy their time strolling about with their parents and siblings. I get to talk to lots of kids and they do bring a special joy to our Market. Our farmers are still bringing in plenty of produce including okra, black eyed peas, tomatoes, onions, eggplant and squash. Pumpkins are available for the Halloween season. We are seeing more Halloween themed art available and lots of great gift ideas for the fast approaching gift giving season.
Now is a great time to get a little Christmas shopping done. We have several bakers who are offering wonderful breads, pastries and exotic baklava for those of you with a chronic sweet tooth. We have a candy maker who can also help you out! Specialized coffees and teas are available. Jewelry and ceramic trinkets are offered by our artists and crafts people.
Our Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of The Day spent sometime getting friendly with folks, and who wouldn’t want to spend a little time petting and getting to know Ferguson? He stole the show and we say thanks for stopping by Ferguson! We had a very good Market altogether and felt like fun was had by all.
It’s not to late to experience a Saturday at the Market as we still have two more weekends, and we hope you can pop in for an open air Market experience we are sure you will enjoy. We are located in the LHUCA Plaza at 5th and Ave. J from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm…… See you there!
FEATURED VENDOR: JO’S DOUGHLIGHTS
And while you’re there, stop by and treat yourself to some wonderful organic baked goods from JO’S DOUGHLIGHTS! Joanna Tivis is new to our market this year, and is offering an array of sourdough-based goods. There is the beautiful artisan loaf, the sandwich loaf, as well as cookies, muffins, and english muffins. Joanna says she’s been baking all her life, starting young with her mom and grandma. The sourdough, however, is a new process for her. Joanna enjoys the process of the sourdough, and told me it’s beneficial for those with Crohn’s and celiac disease, as it’s easier to digest. And of course fresh is best! The flavors she offers vary with the season, so go see what she’s cooking up!
Thank you to everyone who visited the market and we hope to see you next Saturday.
