Market Review Oct 12th
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
Despite the summertime temperatures during the week our morning set up was cool and calm. Our vendors are able to set up like a fine tuned engine. After 21 weeks we can do it with our eyes closed. We were ready and waiting when the clock struck 9:00 am. Shoppers were slow to arrive, but by 9:30 the Plaza started to buzz. We were fortunate to have quite a few out of town guests that definitely kept our vendors busy throughout the morning. I spoke with people from all over Texas including folks from Midland, Richardson, Montgomery, and a group from the Texas Hill Country and the Texas Valley around Brownsville and McAllen. We also had out of state visitors from Albuquerque.
Having first time shoppers usually translates into a great day for our small business owners. At the end of the Market it was a consensus that we all did pretty good! We cannot understate the importance of new clients and we appreciate it when locals direct visitors to our Market. Of course, we saw our ever faithful shoppers with whom we all have become familiar with, and we give extra enthusiastic greetings to them!
Our farmers have been great throughout the spring and summer supplying us with their hard earned bounties. Anybody who has ever grown a vegetable garden understands the care and attention that gardens require to produce good wholesome food. We call this a Farmers Market for a reason, and we understand their importance in making this work year after year. But we also have people who provide breads and fine baked goods. Our Market provides homemade salsas, jams, pickled goods and honey from local hives. These products are our foundation. We also are able to include craftspeople and artisans who spend many hours making the wares that are sold at our Market.
A couple of weeks ago, we had a vendor come down from Amarillo to sell his cute ceramic dogs and pendants…so you never know what you will find! Our small boutique owners lend to the Market’s appeal as well. We are happy to provide all this and more. Our Market provides a place to meet and make friends, to spend a little social and community time in a safe and family friendly atmosphere.
We encourage pet participation and reward our favorite canine with a fine Red Bandana declaring them Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day. We knew Tootsie was the chosen one as she entered the Plaza in her special wagon pulled by her loving owner…by the way, Tootsie is from down the road in Petersburg! So now, with only one weekend Market left, we invite you to stop by and support our local business owners. We will surrender our spot to the Hub City Renaissance Faire next week, but we will be right across the street in the Charles Adam Studio Project area at 5th and Ave. J. Come out and help us close out our season. We thank all of you for your support!
