May 31st Market Review
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
To put things in perspective, I am 73 years old. I was 56 when the first Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market opened 17 years ago in 2008. Wow! How time flies! As many celebrate the end of a school year, we celebrated the beginning of another Market. Our regular vendors greeted each other much like students seeing one another after a summer break. We welcomed quite a few new vendors as well, and we are excited to have them join us this year.
We all set up under bright blue skies with much chatter, hand shaking and hugs. I have participated in many different Markets over the past 5 years, and I must say we vendors have a bit of a family feeling for each other. It is good to see all my fellow vendors back for yet another summer Market in the Plaza at Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts.
To kick things off we had a special quest that welcomed all the kids who came out to the Market. The one and only Bluey, the animated Blue Healer pup from Australian television stopped by. Bluey, you were a big hit! Thank you for helping us kick off this year’s Market! We hope you can come back soon! We also saddled up and offered pony rides for all the cowboys and cowgirls that stopped by, which was a great addition to our family friendly Market. We would like to encourage folks to bring the kids out to experience the excitement of the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market. We will be having lots of special activities for the kids throughout the summer.
It is still early in the growing season, so our farmers are bringing in the produce from winter planting. Our growers brought carrots, turnips, radishes and a large assortment of onions and leafy greens, including potted basil plants for your home garden. We have oyster mushrooms and shelled pecans as well. There are a wide variety of local honeys, jellies, jams, salsas, quesos, assorted spices and pickled goods. And we are just getting started! We were happy to have Suga T and D’s lemonade serving up their famous liquid refresher, and we have a variety of flavored teas to try as well. Our bakers were out in full force with all types of sweet treats and sourdough breads. We are happy to welcome Smoochies. They serve up pancakes and assorted snack items to enjoy as you stroll the Market. We are delighted to welcome back LZD Homemade beef jerky, as they are one of our most popular vendors. And we added a new vendor, All Beef No Bull beef chips. We have lots of great food and drink items for our shoppers to enjoy. For those of you who are looking for gift items we have so much to offer for any gift occasion. We hope you will support these small business owners when birthday, wedding, anniversary, or graduation gifts are on your shopping lists. We can offer handmade jewelry, woodworks, leather goods, beadwork, knitted plushies, 3D printed goods, lotions and soaps, beeswax candles and small boutique clothing. Come out and see all the great things we have to offer.
Our Market is a great place to bring your out of town guests visiting Lubbock. One of my favorite things is interacting with people visiting our fair city. And believe me, we get people from all over the country and some international travelers who stop by our Market. We also have dog visitors, and we encourage people to bring out the family pets. We can see how excited our canine friends get as they wag their tails and stroll the plaza. We like them so much that we pick one to be the Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day. Sophie, with one blue and one brown eye, was happy to collect the coveted red bandana, declaring her the Dog of the Day! Thank you Sophie for stopping by. I love your beautiful eyes! We are thrilled to be back, and hope you will take the time to drop by 5th and Ave. J on Saturday mornings between the hours of 9:00am and 1:00pm. Come and meet all our wonderful vendors and staff. We hope to see you soon!
FEATURED VENDOR: TOUCH OF ETXEKO
One of the new vendors you will see is Lori Foil and her husband with A TOUCH OF ETXEKO. Etxeko means handmade in Basque, and Lori wanted to honor her roots by using this word to describe their tallow based skin care products. Tallow is beef fat (suet) and provides the basis for their whipped body butter, lip balms, lotion bars, and tattoo balm. It has a superior moistening effect on the skin, healing chapped hands, lips, and fresh tattoo areas quickly. They have an array of scents and sizes for you to try, so stop by and pick up some of their unique and healing products!
Thank you to everyone that came to our opening market. We hope to see you next Saturday June 7th at the LDFM in the LHUCA Plaza!
