Market Review June 21
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
Saturday was the last day of spring, and it did not leave with a whimper. The wind was blustery as we set up and only intensified as the morning progressed. I have mentioned in past reviews that the wind is a vendors worst nightmare! We had several vendors who had to remove their canopies for fear they would blow away or be destroyed. We had one major mishap that caused a tent to blow over and take a table and display stand to the ground. Needless to say, it was a rough morning, but we managed to get through to closing time. The winds gusted to over 40 mph and that certainly affected the number of shoppers that stopped in. We also had a huge day around Lubbock with events like Critterfest at the Science Spectrum, Art on the Llano at the Texas Tech Museum, For The Kids benefit at Abuelo’s, and the Heart of Art Market.
We did have our regulars and some out of town guests including folks from Houston, Wichita Falls and Amarillo. We were happy to have a few new vendors, and those new sellers that started at our first Market this year are sticking with us. Our food trucks are back, and we have food being prepared in the Plaza for our visitors. Our farmers are still bringing in wonderful produce, and I have been told that within a couple of weeks we should see the summer crops begin to arrive. That would include okra, cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplant, melons, and more. The recent storms have created a set back for the farms around town, but crops are recovering.
We will continue to have a dollar for dollar SNAP program, and we encourage those who participate in the SNAP program to stop by and really get your best deals when using your SNAP card.
Our Sustainable Food Center offered “Probadita” or “A Small Taste.” These are samples of dishes made with produce available at our Market. The samples are made on the spot and offered to our shoppers. This is always a popular event, and highlights the fresh produce available to our customers. Expect more of “Probadita” as the season continues.
We have what you need! Fresh farm goods, home made bakery goods, great artisan- made gift selections, small boutiques and so much more. We have special events for the kids like scavenger hunts, face painting and kid art. We know that our Market provides a special outing for the family unit. Bring the whole family out and see!

We also know that our dogs are very much part of the family, and we enjoy having our furry family members come out and enjoy the scene. They show how much they enjoy it by their wagging of tails and bright eyed enthusiasm. We like to show our love by celebrating one dog as Tornado/Industrial Arts Dog of the Day. This week Yogi, a 4 year old Golden Doodle rescue dog, was presented the special Red Bandana as a prize! “Atta Boy” Yogi!
Heads up! Next Saturday we will be setting up across the street from the LHUCA Plaza. We will be in the CASP area at 5th and Ave. J as we surrender our regular spot for the PRIDE Event. We hope you will stop by next Saturday June 28th from 9:00am to 1:00pm and support our Downtown Farmers Market.

FEATURED VENDOR: TALK DIRT TO US!
As always, we like to introduce you to a new vendor, and this week we say “Welcome” to Donna Ramirez and her daughter Mackenzee Spruiell with their booth TALK DIRT TO US! They have a pretty display of houseplants and gardeny crafts for your perusal. Based in Levelland, these ladies have taken their love of plants and all things related and created a cottage company. When Covid hit, Donna “retired” from her banking job and found that growing plants was a lot more fun! They have done some vendor events around town, and have an ETSY store for their crafts, including wreaths. Their greenhouse was destroyed last year by a tornado, but they have persevered! Now in it’s 4th year, TALK DIRT TO US has joined the Downtown Farmers Market family, and say they really enjoy the vibe and the friendly people! Come down and be a part of the scene!

We hope to see you next Saturday at the LDFM in the LHUCA Plaza!
