Market Review July 19th
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
Our 8th Market of 2025 was met with blue skies, and a predicted temperature in the triple digits! After a rainy Market last week we flipped the coin, and had a beautiful morning. Our vendors set up in good spirits, and we had a few very early shoppers who would not be denied fresh homegrown tomatoes! With the predicted hot summer days we encourage early shopping. I heard one lady who arrive late asking for tomatoes, but alas the early shoppers had bought them all. Let me just say that our farmers spend the Markets hours moving rapid fire, filling bags nonstop and tending to their customers needs. The produce that we offer has expanded, with lots of corn, okra, cucumbers, onions, zucchini and yellow squash, black eyed peas, potatoes, peppers, eggplant and assorted mushrooms. Our farmers are really bringing in the produce and we hope you will visit our Market and support these hard working people.
Please note that we accept SNAP on all this great food and have a program which doubles your buying power on all our fruits and vegetables. A great way to promote our Market’s produce is when our friends at Sustainable Food Center provides their very popular Probadita or “small taste” samples made from different produce available at our Market. We appreciate the wonderful work that Sustainable Food Center provides for our local community and throughout the state.
We are very proud of our bakers who work hard to bring you the freshest breads, including organic sourdough baked goods, pumpkin, blueberry, zucchini, strawberry, banana nut and lemon loafs. The variety of oven fresh baked goods is truly astounding and we hope you will stop by to check out all the great products our bakers make for the Market. We also have quality coffees to sip as you search out your favorite vendor.
We have a huge selection of beef jerky, salsas, quesos, jellies, pickled goods, and local honey too. For those wanting farm raised meats we have Guil-t Pleasure Farms providing locally raised pork, lamb and goat meat. And we always have a couple of food trucks for those looking for a morning meal.
Our craftspeople provide all kinds of gift needs for all occasions. Here you can find homemade soaps, lotions, healing salves, and genuine beeswax candles. Artisans specializing in custom made jewelry, leather work, woodwork and crochet plushies are also available. We have small boutiques that provide clothing of all types and sizes along with designer hats.
We find that our vendor selection varies from week to week so you just never know what kind of great gifts and food products you might find when you stop by our Market.
We are very family friendly! A customer commented on the number of baby strollers that seem to take over the plaza. We are stroller and wheelchair friendly as well. Our plaza is easily navigated and ramps provide access to all parts of the Market.

We had quite a few dog owners show up, so there were multiple dogs throughout the plaza. We appreciate our canine visitors, and provide dog treats and cool clean water. We also award one outstanding canine a bright red bandanna and declare him or her Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day. We were happy to have Judge visit us and we decided that he was deserving of the title. Great job Judge! Wow! It is now late July and the summer is flying by. Don’t miss an opportunity to gather with family and friends and check out our Downtown Market located in the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts Plaza at 5th and Ave. J. Stop by between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm. We look forward to seeing you!

FEATURED VENDOR: VERY BERRY SWEET CREATIONS
We seem to be very fortunate to have a new vendor to highlight each week, and today we are spotlighting Brittany Hernandez with her business VERY BERRY SWEET CREATIONS. She and her helpers are whipping up some refreshing cool beverages for us, as well as mini pancakes to snack on. There is freshly made lemonade, but not just any lemonade! There is plain, but there are also many fun flavors to be had. They have fresh strawberries, blueberries, and cherries you can add. They will also make you a “Dirty” soda! You choose the soda, and what flavors you’d like added. There are some interesting choices, like Dr. Pepper with coconut cream and lime! Wow! When asked, Brittany said that making these drinks for family gatherings started it all off, and she is in her third year with the business. There are also iced lattes and matchas available. These are some fun and refreshing drinks to help cool off on a hot day, so come on down and look for the pretty pink canopy and give it a try!

Thanks to those who visited the market this week and we look forward to seeing you at the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market in the LHUCA Plaza at 5th street & Avenue J!
