Market Review July 26

By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates

The morning was bright and sunny. The Tomato Festival in Idalou put a large dent in our vendor numbers, but we set up and prepared for another Market day in the Plaza at Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts. We had our regular farmers, and they brought a great assortment of farm fresh produce for our shoppers. Our bakers were ready, and our canning experts and artisans were set to go. So off we went with shoppers showing up promptly at 9:00 am and they got right down to business.

The produce flew off the shelf in the early hours and all the vendors got busy as the day began. There were out of town shoppers from Mineral Wells, Fort Worth, and Stillwater, and Oklahoma. It’s always fun to chat with our out-of-town guests! We got some great feedback from our new Stillwater friends, as he and his wife were very complimentary about Lubbock and the people they had interacted with. I spoke to a couple who were Market customers from the old Buddy Holly Ave. location and they were happy to reconnect.

As always there were several local folks who were experiencing our Market for the very first time. Baby strollers were strolling, and families seem to fill the Plaza. It’s interesting how we can watch the arrival of different folks coming from all directions who end up covering the Plaza in search of food, and all kinds of different items. They waste no time, and seem to have a particular destination in mind as they fill their bags and converse with our different vendors. In fact, I had the opportunity to talk to some young entrepreneurs who hope to bring their home garden harvest to our Market next week. I told them how vendors are more than just sellers of goods… you enter a world of learning communication skills, and  creating camaraderie with fellow vendors. This is what makes a good market.

We are happy that our bustling little spot is a place where people go not only to support small business owners, but also to connect with people from different places with different backgrounds. There are all ages, from the tiniest baby to the old guy with decades of life experiences to share. This is such an important part of what we offer to the public… a place to go and spend an hour or two enjoying the company of others…experiencing the give and take of conversation and life stories. It’s something we hope you would enjoy being a part of.

We are, of course, a Farmers Market and we offer all kinds of farm produce like corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, onions, leafy greens, and black eyed peas. There are canned goods like jellies, pickled all kinds of things, salsas, and quesos. Baked wares from several different and unique vendors that have all kinds of breads, cookies, pies, and scones. We offer flavored teas, iced lattes and cold fruit drinks like lemonade. There are so many different jewelry makers and crafts people that you could spend hours looking through all their fine work. We offer such a variety of goods that I can’t list them all.

You’ll just have to come to the Market to experience it. And bring your dogs! We are very dog friendly and give a bright red bandana to our favorite canine. We chose Tino as the Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day, and then wouldn’t you know it….Mr. Cool showed up and we had to give a bandana to this cool cat …er, I mean dog named Finn. Heck why not have two Dogs of the Day when it calls for it! Congratulations to Tino and Finn for being our winners. Come out and join us next Saturday from 9:00am to 1:00pm at the LHUCA Plaza located at 5th and Ave. J. I am sure you will enjoy yourself. Bring friends and family. The more the merrier!
