Market Review Aug. 2nd

By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates

After Friday’s afternoon downpour, we were given a heavenly Saturday morning! We set up in a stillness, void of wind and with the scent of rain still lingering. This type of morning brings out the best in us vendors. We had a couple new sellers join us and they brought with them the fruits of their labor. Literally! Beautiful Pecos Cantaloupes and watermelons, which were the talk of the Market! And believe me they were as advertised…..sweet and juicy! We also welcomed Farm to Faith to the Market for the first time, and reports are that they had a very successful day! We also experienced quite a few first time visitors to our spot in the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts Plaza, with many of them from out of town. Get a load of this list. We had shoppers from El Paso, Denton, Tulsa, Las Cruces, Lamesa, and even a couple from Down Under! Yes, you know, Australia mate! It is great fun having so many people visit our Market from so many far flung places.

Even with the Lavenderfest going on we managed to have a very steady flow of customers. As I have often mentioned we are not the only market in town, and often the competition can be quite fierce for both vendor and shopper participation.

The passing clouds and the lower temperatures made for a delightful morning and both the vendors and the shoppers were well aware that we had a wonderful day for our Market.

This time of year we are very grateful for the cooler days and the energy that comes along with them.

Our farmers are going gang busters, bringing a wide variety of produce to Market! We are offering so much! There’s tomatoes, onions, several varieties of squash, black eyed peas, corn, eggplant, potatoes, fresh figs, okra, apples, and, as mentioned, cantaloupes and watermelons! Many of our farmers are canning their goods and offer all kinds of jellies, salsas, and pickled goods.  Come out and fill up a bag or two with this homegrown produce and support our farmers! We want to make sure you know we accept SNAP benefits, and we double your dollars up to $30.00 on all our fruits and vegetables. This is a great way to stretch the buying power for all SNAP participants.

We have wonderful bakers who work hard to bring you their specialties like sourdough and jalapeno breads, cinnamon rolls, pies, croissants, macaroons, and the best brownies!

Our artisans have all types of arts and crafts for you to choose from. Along with the ever popular Plushies for the kids we have jewelry makers, homemade soaps and lotions, candles, and much more! We have a boutique to shop for kids and adult clothes. We have house plants grown by our friends from Talk Dirt to Me. We hope you will stop by for a stroll through the LHUCA Plaza and experience our Market.

We enjoy sharing our Market with our canine friends and encourage our shoppers to bring their dogs. We make sure they have cool clean water and dog treats to make them happy. One dog gets to claim the title of Tornado/Industrial Arts Dog of the Day! Just look how happy Duncan Hines is after being told he is our winner. With a great name like Duncan Hines who wouldn’t be happy! Hey ,we have fun, and want to include you too. So make plans to stop by 5th and Ave. J on Saturday from 9:00am to 1:00pm. Believe me it’s worth the trip!

FEATURED VENDOR: MANDUJANO BROTHERS PRODUCE

Especially when we have the great honor of vendors like MANDUJANO BROTHERS PRODUCE on hand. Dayanna Mundujano and her cousin Ryan Domingas came all the way from Coyanosa, which is about 3 hours away in Pecos County. They are part of a family run business that has been growing melons for over 20 years. They offer cantaloupe, watermelon, and honeydew, as well as their flavored pecans and peach jam. The family participates in many markets, including Midland and Alpine, as well as selling their fruits in a store front in their town. Dayanna will be coming to Texas Tech this fall, so thought they would give a Lubbock Market a try. We’re so glad, as these are the quintessential melons we all want! Come while the season is happening!
