Visit the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market this Saturday, September 6th at the LHUCA PLAZA (5th St & Ave J) from 9:00AM to 1:00PM for a taste of downtown Lubbock, and the finest in local produce, meat, baked goods and arts. We are a kid friendly, dog friendly, family event in the heart of the Downtown Arts District. Be sure to say “Thank You” to our hard-working and dedicated vendors!

 Market Review August 30th

By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates

The Plaza was still a bit wet when we arrived for our set up. It had been washed clean by the downpour on Friday night. The overcast sky kept things cool and the mood was energetic. We expected a nice crowd, and we were not disappointed as the shoppers arrived early, and in force. Among the crowd was a stray dog that we later found out was a Welsh Terrier named Shrimpy. He made the rounds for a couple of hours and then his owner showed up and carried him away. I think he had more fun than anybody! We all were very happy and relieved when he was reunited with his master, who lives across the street from the Plaza.

We had visitors from Plainview, Ft. Worth and from Weslaco, which is way down south in the Rio Grande Valley. I had some nice chats with these folks and they all seemed to be enjoying their time in Lubbock. One couple had taken the time to drive around the Loop, and stop in the Windmill Museum before doing a little Market shopping. With school back in session, we are seeing more college students stopping in. Many of them are here away from home and experiencing our Market for the very first time.

The morning remained pleasant and the shoppers came and went with bags full of fresh farm goods from our hard working growers. It is peak season for harvest and we have a bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables to choose from. A short list would include tomatoes, onions, eggplant, potatoes, squash, watermelons and cantaloupe. We have quite a few regulars who show up and go directly to their favorite farm vendor and fill up on all the goodies.. so get here early and be sure to get in on the great produce our vendors supply.

We have a booth set up especially for those of you who are receiving SNAP benefits. We can help you with a dollar for dollar bonus when you shop with us.

We also have a wide variety of baked goods provided by several different vendors who bring breads, cookies, scones, pies, macaroons and more. If you are in need of gifts for special occasions please stop by and take a look at all the wonderful arts and crafts that we offer including homemade soaps, candles, lotions and all types of jewelry. For the kids there are knitted plushies and picture books. We have a little something for everybody.

We also are happy when folks show up and just stroll the Plaza for meet and greet activities. We are very family friendly and wheelchair and stroller accessible for those shoppers that bring the young babies or those with disabilities. We are dog friendly as well and each week we present a Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day. Cyndie Buckle is one of our regular shoppers and she brought Ferguson along. We awarded him the cherished Red Bandana and declare him Dog of the Day!

We are happy to be back in our usual spot at Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts Plaza after spending the last two weeks across the street at CASP. So please look for us at 5th and Ave. J in the Plaza. We open up for business at 9:00 am and close at 1:00 pm. Make a point of putting us down on your things to do list next Saturday! We look forward to seeing you there.

FEATURED VENDOR: VALHALLA BOUND

In lieu of introducing a new vendor, this week we are highlighting VALHALLA BOUND. Courtney Headley has been bringing her beeswax candles and natural self care products to our market for many years now. Her candles are scented with a variety of therapeutic essential oils and come in an array of styles you will find no where else! Courtney also creates head to toe skin care goods like foaming bath butters, complete care oil, and Life Balm, so named as it is helpful for a variety of skin ailments and irritations. You will also find Witch Bags created by Patty Benton. These are colorful and unique bags that come in a variety of shapes and sizes. She has water bottle carriers, insulated lunch boxes, purses, and totes. There is also the lovely jewelry made by LaQuetta Purkiss. She uses antique glass beads and semi-precious gems to make her pieces. So, between all three of these creative ladies, you’re sure to find something for yourself, or that special someone.

Thank you to those who visited the market this week and we look forward to seeing you next week at the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market on the LHUCA Plaza.
