Market Review June 12th 2021
by Paul Bullock
If ever you would like to come down to the Market early to see how we as a team work to prepare for the weekly event……..well I would like to invite you! The vendors arrive early and begin the process of setting up their booths and placing the items they have for sale. It might not be poetry in motion, but it is certainly worth watching from a park bench with a cup of tea or coffee. The reason I am mentioning the set up is because that’s where we start for you, the public. Preparation so that we can serve you in a professional manner each week.
We had a vendor count of 50, and that is up a bit from last week!
Three markets down and four months of markets to go, and already there is a lot of beautiful produce being offered. We had tomatoes, turnips, beets, peppers, corn and squash! I am surprised to see the variety of homemade salsas and pickled goods.
There’s a wonderful selection of baked goods, including homemade breads, sweet rolls, cookies, and muffins (some are gluten-free and delicious), and homemade soaps that look more like cup cakes and should have warning labels saying “Do not eat!”.
We have new vendors and old vendors that are determined to made the Lubbock Downtown Farmer’s Market… the place to buy homemade goods, homegrown produce and home baked treats.
I hope to meet the vendors one on one as each week passes, and share their unique stories with you. I know that the vendors I spoke with today are very proud of the produce and products that they present weekly to our area friends. At the end of the day I took the time to stop by each of the vendors in order to just ask, “How did you do today ?” The vast majority were smiling and said that they did great! And they were looking forward to the next Market!
Now let’s talk about my highlight of the day… all the children playing with the juggling sticks that Mary and I make! Mary and I have spent the past 5 or 6 years bringing our sticks to the Market and sharing them with those children and adults who are eager to try to learn about them. We encourage audience participation and truly enjoy the children we are able to interact with.
Each week we have lots of dogs and we choose one each Saturday who we declare Tornado Industrial/Arts, “Dog of the Day.” So, without further ado we congratulate Millie on her outstanding performance today at Lubbock Downtown Farmer’s Market! Way to go Millie!
Please make the time to visit The Original Downtown Farmers Market on any Saturday morning from 9 am until 1:00 pm and get to know a little bit more about the town we share, the people who live here, and the things they grow and create.
