Market Review June 25, 2022
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
It was a beautiful morning on a shady Buddy Holly Ave. The vendors worked to set up their booths where there is always a sense of community. Offers to help each other, and inquiries as to each other’s well being are the norm. After a couple of years of doing the Lubbock Downtown Farmer’s Market, and being involved with other markets and local events, we have found that we vendors all depend on each other. We all have a common interest in showing and selling our wares. We come together once a week to create a vibrant Market that will serve as a place to meet and shop and spend a little time doing something different with friends and family.
We see many customers that are very regular and new shoppers who sometimes are out-of-towners. Every Market is a bit different from all the rest. We had a great vendor turn out and the produce is beginning to show up. The fruits and vegetables are back, and this is the when the real meaning of Farmer’s Market begins. But along with fresh locally grown produce there are plenty of other things that make our Market work. We have fresh homemade salsas and pickled goods. Baked goods, hot coffee, and food vendors. Many of our skilled craftsmen are back with a wide variety of goods.
Our customers showed up and continued in a steady stream of young families, old souls and dogs. For our Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day we have selected Lucy. Lucy stops by regularly with her best friend Rod and we are happy they made the Market a part of their morning. We hope to see more vendors with more farm fresh goods and of course more customers as the summer continues on. We will be there for you each Saturday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Come out and support this wonderful Market.
Our highlighted vendor this week is HAPPY HEN EGGS 602. Michael & Rezchelle Jennings have just started coming to the market this year with their beautifully hued eggs. Based in Littlefield, they started buying chickens because store bought eggs just don’t taste the same! With about 80 chickens, they have lots of eggs to sell. These chickens are free range, eating the weeds and grasses by their home, with just some added calcium to strengthen the shells of the eggs. With hints of blues + greens, the eggs are pretty to look at too! We learned that the different colors are determined by the color of a chicken’s ear…who knew?
