Market Review July 16, 2022
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
We had another calm and shady morning for our set up. It becomes very routine for the vendors who set up and break down their booth’s for markets and special events all the time. We had a nice vendor turn out with garden fresh produce showing up as the hot summer continues. The heat and lack of rain has definitely affected many of the small family farms in our area. However, it seems that our farmers have made it through the slow start and have begun to see steady garden production.
Our shoppers showed up slowly, but continued to increase in numbers as the morning progressed. It is a great social environment for kids and young families where it is one big “show and tell” session as families move from one booth to another. I must say it is interesting when a shopper zeroes in on my booth and eye contact is made from a distance. As the shopper approaches I know I am about to have an interesting conversation with an intrigued potential customer. I know that vendors become like broken records repeating the same story over and over again, but the story is always new to the shopper and is told with equal enthusiasm each and every time. That is part of the vending world.
The Market is always dog friendly and sometimes looks like a designated DOG PARK AREA. That was true at this Market. There was a wide variety of dogs big and small. There is always cool water and a treat waiting for our canine friends and we like to feature one dog weekly as our Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day. We were happy to have Axel and his best friend at Market and congratulate him as our choice for Dog of the Day!
We appreciate all of the people who participate in our Market, both shoppers and vendors. We hope you will support our Market by dropping by to see the selection of fruits and vegetables, enjoy some baked goods and a cup of coffee, and spend an hour or two exploring the variety of arts and crafts and all the other things we offer. Come early and beat the heat. We are hopeful that you will visit and support local businesses and artisans located at 19th and Buddy Holly Ave. every Saturday from 9:00 to 1:00.
Our highlighted vendor this week is ALACRAN CREATIONS. Alexis Ortiz creates T-shirts with fun and seasonal motifs. She began the business 2 years ago during quarantine by making resin key chains, but found the process affected her lungs. Since Alexis herself enjoyed wearing fun T-shirts, it was a natural to start making them. She orders screen print transfers and applies them to the shirts with an industrial heat press. It’s a hot job, but her shirt designs won’t crack or lift. This is Alexis’ first year at the market, and we welcome her and her husband Manuel!
We would like to thank everyone who came out to the July 16th market and we hope to see you next Saturday at the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market!
