Market Review June 29, 2024
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
Seeing the forecast of 100 degrees had some of us preparing for a sweat bath. Even on an 80 degree morning carrying all of one’s vendor gear can get the sweat glands working pretty quickly. By the time our shoppers arrived, some of us were already wiping the moisture from our faces. The early bird vendors are the smart ones! They get there way before the sun begins to beat down on the plaza. We had concerns as to whether or not the forecast would keep people from venturing outside, but when we opened the plaza began to fill with people. It got busy quickly, and some vendors had people waiting in line to be served. About an hour into the Market a wonderful cloud cover rescued us for awhile. As the morning moved into afternoon the sun beat down on our Market area and the shopper numbers dwindled. That is to be expected, and is why during these hot months we encourage early shopping. Despite the high temperatures we had a very good turn out. I spoke with visitors from San Diego. They were here visiting friends, and we say thank you to our locals who bring their visiting friends and families down…everybody seems to enjoy a good outdoor Market!
And still, first time shoppers are finding their way to our Market. One couple said they had last been to our Market when we were located on Buddy Holly Ave. We welcomed them back, and we are pleased that old shoppers are finding our new location! We had over thirty vendors and several food trucks to keep our shoppers busy. Everything from wood crafts, crocheting, candles, para cord bracelets, and fine jewelry to dazzle the eye. Bakers with pastries, sourdough bread, flat breads, baklava and big cookies! Fresh fruits and vegetables including tomatoes, onions, a variety of squash, cherries, apricots, flavored pecans and oyster mushrooms. There are plenty of chips and assorted salsas. We have plenty of jellies and local honey, homemade beef jerky in assorted flavors, and locally grown grass fed beef. I can’t even name all the great things here at the Market.
And there’s all the beuatiful dogs! We honor them by crowning one dog Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day! We have a well behaved and beautiful winner this week named Fenway! He was such a nice boy! Congratulations Fenway! Our assistant manager Sheri said as we were about to leave the plaza, “You can always tell if the Market was successful by how full the trash cans are when we finish”. According to the trash can theory we had a great Market. Thanks for coming out. We hope to see you again next Saturday from 9:00 to 1:00 at the LHUCA plaza at 5th and Ave. J.
FEATURED VENDOR: HAND MADE BY HANSEN
This week we are featuring HAND MADE BY HANSEN with our new vendor highlight. Jared and Sydney Hansen each create their own crafts to sell. Sydney offers various sewn items, such as microwave bowls, travel tissue packs, bookmarks, potholders, and T-shirt quilts. (I’d love a t-shirt quilt of all my old tie-dyes! She says she will make custom ones!) Sydney says she learned the art of sewing from her grandma, starting with the quilt idea. Jared specializes in woodworking, and turns out (literally, on a lathe) beautiful pens. He also has some epoxy pens, which are more colorful, and pretty paper towel holders. Come meet this friendly and talented couple, and pick up a HAND MADE BY HANSEN!
We would like to thank everyone who visited this week’s market and hope to see you next week at the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market on the LHUCA Plaza.
