Market Review Sept. 28th
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
Oh, how we love these autumn mornings! Fresh is a word that comes to mind. We had a great set up for our Market. Without sounding like a broken record, I would say that due to other events our vendor numbers dipped a little and so our concerns peaked. People sometimes say there is nothing to do in Lubbock, but this weekend was full of all types of great events.
So after a slow start we saw a nice number of visitors to our Market. We have Texas Tech’s Parent’s Week to thank for that. Tech students accompanied by their parents sure helped keep our Market busy this week. We had families from Amarillo, Borger, Frisco, Corsicana, Beltran, and from the Texas Hill Country. I spoke with a young mother who recently retired from the Marine Corp. She and her retired U.S. Army husband, decided to move to Lubbock from Hawaii where they were both stationed. She told me they threw a dart at a map….and it hit Lubbock! Well, that’s one way to choose a destination for your family!
We had groups of college students showing up talking about the exam week they had just finished, and our Market seemed to be a nice place to relax and enjoy after a week of student stress. Most of the students that I talked to seemed to feel good about their exam performance. My personal experience with college exams was never great, so being able to talk to these young people just starting out makes me feel good. The bits of advice I offer them are appreciated…I think? After all, taking tips from a Wizard seems pretty sound.
Anyway, our Market was busy through the morning and our sellers seemed to have done well. We’re into our final month of Market and are still offering farm fresh produce including okra, squash, tomatoes, onions, and eggplant, to mention a few. Our crafts people are offering a large assortment of gift ideas for any occasion. Our bakers are bringing wonderful baked goods, and we have lots of specialty vendors including wine, beef jerky, pasture fed beef and micro greens.
Our canine friends also showed up as usual and we declared Yuki our winner of the Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day. Yuki in Japanese means Snow. So Yuki, you are our winner and we say thanks for stopping by and we say “Omedetou gozaimasu”….that congratulations in Japanese! We hope that you will visit us next Saturday from 9:00 to 1:00 in the LHUCA Plaza located at 5th and Ave. J.
FEATURED VENDOR: HANDMADE BY HOLLY
HANDMADE BY HOLLY is yet another creative new vendor at the market. Meet Holly Lorren, who is well educated in the arts and brings a number of talents to the table, literally. She draws, paints, makes clay items, and does bead work. Holly has her Masters Degree in Studio Arts, was an Art teacher in Dallas, and is now bringing her creations to our Market. You will find reasonably priced beaded bracelets and earrings, clay pendants and earrings that have been painted with watercolors, twisted metal earrings, resin gummy bear items, and her original drawings, and paintings. Go by and say hi to Holly!
Thank you to everyone who visited this market. We have only three remaing markets left in the 2024 market season. We hope to see you next week at the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market in the LHUCA Plaza.
