Market Review Oct. 17
By Paul Bullck & Mary Gates
October Markets sometime get a cold blast of air during the early set ups, and that certainly was the case on Saturday. Our fearless leader Chuck always arrives at 6 a.m. sharp to get things ready for the vendors set up and arrival of the shoppers. The predawn temperatures were only in the mid to high 30’s, and it took Chuck 4 hours to shake the chill from his bones!
We all sought out rays of sunlight to warm us as we set up our canopies. The shoppers arrived a little late to avoid those chilly temperatures, but as the morning warmed, the foot traffic picked up. The Phil Me Up Filipino food truck seemed to be busy, as good hot food on a cold morning hits the spot. It was a game day for our Red Raiders, so our customer numbers dipped a bit as they always do when Tech plays at home and tailgate parties start early. We had plenty of people wearing Tech gear, and of course we had some out of town folks visiting for the game. I spoke to folks from Wichita Falls and Midland.

Our regular shoppers showed up as the morning warmed and filled their bags with tomatoes, onions, carrots, squash and other fresh produce that our farm families are still harvesting. And we are still honoring SNAP and WIC cards. If you are receiving benefits we have a double your dollars system which allows you to really stretch your produce dollars.

Slim’s Spice’s was back for his second week and indicated that he was doing pretty well selling his homemade dry spice mixes. Zoe brought her custom made stickers and buttons. Karen and Holly were bundled up selling their homemade jewelry. The gift giving season is coming our way, and we have some great vendors who would love to show you their special crafts.
We have finished 21 weeks of Market and only have one left. We will be setting up across the street in the Charles Adams Studio Project parking lot at 5th and Ave. J next Saturday for our finale. The Louise Hopkins Underwood Center For the Arts will be hosting Lubbock RenFaire, so come out and help us end our Market season and check out the RenFaire too!

We always like to show our appreciation to all the dogs and their owners for their support, and we pick one each week to be our Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day. Luna won the Red bandana that declared her the Dog of the Day.
We certainly are grateful for all the support we have had this year, and hope that perhaps you will find a little time on Sat. October 24th to stop by the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market and see us one last time until next year. We are open from 9:00 to 1:00. and will be easy to find at 5th and Ave J.
