Market Review Oct. 1, 2022
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
The cool mornings and shady streets are quite a change from the blistering midsummer’s heat, but that’s how it is as the fall season begins. The Blue Light was setting up their huge outdoor stage for a night time street concert as we set up our Market.
A few of our farming vendors have closed shop as they have finished their last harvest, but have no fear we still have several vendors bringing their fresh farm produce to the Market. The shoppers arrived slowly, but they kept coming steadily throughout the morning and we had a great turnout overall. Sometimes when there are fewer vendors we do better as our shoppers come out to buy our goods and support our Market.
We are very grateful to our regular shoppers and those occasional shoppers as well. Our Texas Tech Red Raiders were out of town and playing at 11:00 am. The Garden was hosting a Greek mixer so we had a huge number of Tech students show up to watch the game. We would like to say thank you to The Garden, a large outdoor sports bar and music venue, for their support. The Garden has opened early every Saturday and provided clean restrooms and a great place to relax. We couldn’t do this without their generosity.
The Tech students added a hustle bustle feel to the Market and I think we all enjoyed our interaction with them. There were lots of families with lots of kids. The kids bring a sense of joy to our Market. Let’s face it; kids are cute.
So are dogs and we always have plenty of dogs that visit. We choose one dog as the Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day. Charlie showed up so cool, calm, collected and looking so hip that he wins by a mile! Way to go Charlie!
We hope that you will stop by our Market and support our farmers who are still farming. Our bakers who are baking wonderful goodies to eat. And our artists and craftsmen and women who bring out their wares. We are open from 9:00 to 1:00 on Saturday. We are located at 19th and Buddy Holly Ave.
We are pleased to highlight MILENAS BAKERY this week. Serge Guraklyan brings his delightful pastries to market each week, and he is always so busy it was hard to get an interview! Part of what makes his creations so special is that he is a third generation baker, with family recipes from France, Austria, Israel, Siberia, and Armenia. Based in Ralls, this is his first year at the Market, and he is looking to expand his availability here in Lubbock. The selection he brings includes almond & chocolate croissants, baklava, lemon bars, cannolis, chocolate eclair with real cream filling, Italian shortbread cookies, French ruffle tubes, French tarts, and the best tiramisu! Whew! That’s a lot of choices! If you ever try his goods, you’ll go back for more!
We have two more market’s remaining in the 2022 season. We hope to see you next Saturday!
