Visit the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market this Saturday, July 19th at the LHUCA PLAZA (5th St & Ave J) from 9:00AM to 1:00PM for a taste of downtown Lubbock, and the finest in local produce, meat, baked goods and arts. We are a kid friendly, dog friendly, family event in the heart of the Downtown Arts District. Be sure to say “Thank You” to our hard-working and dedicated vendors!

July 12 Revew

By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates

Over the past five years that I have worked as a vendor at the Market, I can only remember two rain days that shut us down. The rain on Saturday started promptly at 8 am as our vendors were setting up for our 9:00 start time. We had hopes that the rain would pass, but it didn’t! Many of our vendors were determined to stick it out, despite the wet weather. The rain slowed then became harder on several occasions, so our vendors stayed beneath their canopies and waited.  Around 10:00 our first shopper appeared, protected by an umbrella. Then a second and third shopper entered the Plaza! Lo and behold the rains continued, and so did the people coming out to buy fresh produce and baked goods and pancake breakfasts. Although several of our vendors choose not to set up, and some closed shop early as the rain came down, our Market managed to serve those that choose to stop and shop on a rainy Saturday morning.

The shoppers were there to buy what they needed and then get out of the weather. That was apparent as our customers came and went very quickly. The pace was rapid as our farmers bagged their produce and our coffee vendors and bakers served up their goodies with smiling faces and fast hands. The shoppers kept coming slowly but surely making their way into the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center Plaza throughout the morning. Families showed up pushing baby carriages and our regular shoppers came and went with their bags filled. I asked several of the vendors how they did despite the rain, and most of them said they did pretty well considering the circumstances.

We had two new coffee vendors and a new popcorn food truck Poppin’ West Texas Handcrafted Kettle Corn. We were very happy to have Mi Kocina show up for those wishing to have a taste of great Mexican Food. Lubbock sends out food inspectors to pop up events to insure that safe quality food is served, and we were happy to report that this surprise inspection showed that all our vendors passed with flying colors.

We are seeing more produce come to the Market, and we offer a great deal on SNAP cards where our vendors are able to double your SNAP dollars up to $30.00 worth of purchases. That makes buying produce and food products the best deal around when using SNAP. Come see the great selection of produce including onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, corn, potatoes, micro greens and so much more. Also we have pickled goods, jams, local honey, salsas, and quesos that qualify for SNAP benefits. We can also offer all types of quality baked goods to our SNAP customers including sour dough breads, pies, cookies, and pastries.

We did not have as many dogs visiting as we usually do, but we found a beauty to award our Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day bandana to. Meet Sanger! With those piercing blue eyes how could we not choose him. Thanks for coming to the Market Sanger!

Despite the rain the Market did well, and we had a very rewarding feeling as we packed up. We want to say a special thanks to our vendors that set up and faced the weather with a smile, and of course a huge thank you to the shoppers who decided to leave home and head out to our Market on a stormy Saturday morning. Bravo to all who participated. The rain stopped and things were drying off as our vendors and staff closed down for the day. We are hoping for a beautiful day next Saturday and hope that we will see you between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm in the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts Plaza located at 5th and Avenue J.

FEATURED VENDOR: EVERMORE COFFEE CO.

And while you’re there, enjoy an espresso created by Dylan and Kyndra Cullifer with EVERMORE COFFEE CO. This past market was their very first time bringing their craft to the public, and they say they had a blast! The company evolved from Dylan’s passion for coffee. Kyndra bought him his first espresso machine, then another upgrade, and they’ve been making it for their family and friends for months now to hone their skills. They have a variety of flavors, plus seasonal specials, and you can have it hot or iced. Stop by their beautiful booth, and enjoy a quick pick me up!

We hope to see you next week in the LHUCA Plaza at 5th Street & Avenue J.
