Market Review Aug. 9th

By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates

The dark bank of clouds to the north was very noticeable as I made my way to our Saturday morning Farmers Market. We were fortunate that it crept south and covered us for the better part of the morning, which helped keep the heat factor way down. Wow… what a difference those clouds made for us!

Upon arriving at the LHUCA, I immediately noticed a lack of parking spaces. I then saw that a line of people was quickly forming in front of the Icehouse right across the street from the LHUCA Plaza. They were having a Warehouse sale, and we knew that we would benefit from the additional foot traffic. And boy did we ever! We often have things happening in the area that overflow into our Market. The morning was fast and furious as the Plaza stayed busy with not only our regular customers, but so many of the people visiting the Icehouse. We appreciate all of the people who stopped by after visiting the Warehouse sale. We hope that some of those shoppers will visit us again in the near future.

We had out of town visitors from Seattle, Connecticut and Albuquerque this week. If you have visitors coming to town we hope you will bring them out to our Market! It’s a fun thing to do.

Our vendor count was a bit low, due to the expected heat, and also a Saturday evening Market that sometimes will take a few of our vendors who hope that evening temperatures will be more conducive for shopper participation. Those vendors that did set up in the Plaza for our morning Market seemed to do very well.

Sustainable Foods set up and packed our Green Shopping bags with produce from our assorted vendors and sold them for $30.00 a bag. What a great deal, and I’ll tell you that those bags didn’t last very long at all. Our SNAP table seemed to stay busy as well. Please remind anyone you know that receives SNAP benefits that we offer a great deal matching dollar for dollar up to $30.00 on all produce at our Market.

And boy, do we have a great selection coming in during these midsummer months! Pecos melons were available, both cantaloupe and watermelons! There’s black eyed peas by the box. We have fresh corn, peppers, tomatoes, figs, several varieties of squash, pecans, apples, potatoes, onions, okra, and eggplant.

We welcomed a new baker, Thumbs Up Baking Co. They brought the sweets with great cookie selections and individual pie slices! In fact it was a great day for the bakers as a couple of them packed up early after selling out! We have some outstanding bakers at our Market. Come and check them out. Have a cup of coffee from Evermore Coffee with your pie! We have tables and benches for those of you who would like a little midmorning snack.

Our artisans seemed to do well with their jewelry, art pieces, crocheted plushies, children’s books and other assorted gift items. Come out and support these small business owners whenever you need a gift for almost any occasion.

We had our share of dog visitors, and we always award one dog the title of Tornado/Industrial Arts Dog of the Dog. How about a shout out for Lady Bird. She went home wearing the coveted Red Bandana! Bring your dogs! They all love our Market!

We hope you will take the time to visit us next Saturday morning from 9:00 to 1:00. We will be setting up across the street from the LHUCA Plaza at the Charles Adams Studio Projects on 5th and Ave. J. The LHUCA Plaza has been reserved for another event. Don’t miss the opportunity to come out and get your farm fresh fruits and vegetables.

FEATURED VENDOR: FAITH 2 FARM

One of the vendors that will provide you great produce is FAITH 2 FARM. This is a local, family run operation that has an amazing array of food. The McGee family is in their third year leasing what used to be Sunburst Farms, and they are growing some great stuff! Okra, corn, eggplant, squashes, black eyed peas, tomatoes, turnips, radish, cucumbers, peppers…I’m sure there’s more! They started bringing their produce to our market 2 weeks ago, and they are quite popular! They also have a market at the farm location at MLK and E 88th St., so if they don’t have what your looking for at our market (they don’t bring all their choices to town) you can visit them there all days except Sunday. They have an impressive outreach with their produce as well, supplying United Supermarkets in Dallas, and a contract with Affiliated Foods. Hats off to this hard working family, bringing fresh food to us!

We hope to see you next Saturday at the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM at 5th street and Avenue J!
