Market Review Sept. 19

Seventeen down and 5 to go. Let me tell you that when we have opening day for the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market in late May, the summer seems so long and daunting…then suddenly we have entered the month of September and fall is only a couple of days away. We had a great Market, with a steady flow of customers.
We had the good people from Sustainable Food Center out sharing recipes with everyone. Fresh produce from our Market Farmers was prepared on the spot and samples were tasted and tested by many of our shoppers. Sustainable Food Center always prepares some tasty dishes. They and LBK Grown also put together the $30.00 assorted grocery bag. Those bags are filled with produce from our Farmers. I think they did a great job, and those bargain bags didn’t last long.
After Texas Tech’s by the hair on their chinny chin chin Friday night victory over the University of Houston, we had some happy students and their family members out to see what we are all about. We had visitors from Hobbs, Midland, El Paso and Leander. We still have people stop by who haven’t been out to see us since we were set up on Buddy Holly Avenue. We always enjoy reconnecting with old customers.
We welcomed a new vendor, Lazy Fox Farms from Smyer. They brought a variety of homemade soaps made with goat’s milk. We also had some beautiful crochet work. They offered bandanas, hair scrunchies and drink coasters. Our regular bakers Jo’s Doughlights and Emerald House had great sales, offering Sourdough breads, cinnamon rolls, brownies, macaroons and more.
Our Farm Families… Block 20, Forbes Family Backyard Farms, Faith2Farm, and Sunburst Farms have done a fantastic job. We are all hoping that September rains come, and the cooler weather give these growers a bountiful fall. Come out and support our Farmers! They are bringing all kinds lovely produce to Market… tomatoes, onions, eggplant, okra, black eyed peas, peppers, cantaloupe and watermelons. SQUASH! Lots of yellow, zucchini, and spaghetti, squash. Our farmers also offer jams, jellies, salsas, and local honey.
We are happy to be involved in providing Double your Dollars if you are receiving SNAP benefits. We have helpful staff members who are here to assist you.
We have some wonderful vendors who specialize in jewelry making. Para-cord bracelets, wire finger rings, necklaces, glass beadwork are all available.
We had Phil Me Up Filipino Food truck out, and they stayed pretty busy. They cook it up fresh. Come on by and have some authentic Filipino cuisine. Also check out our House Band “Snail Farm.” What a fun band to listened to!
We never forget to show appreciation for our doggy friends that stop by for a dog treat and some cool clean water, and we like to present one dog a Red Bandana that signifies them as Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day. Millie was the clear winner. Congratulations Millie!
As mentioned we still have 5 more weeks of the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market left. We hope that with cooler weather you will stop by and see what we offer. Our Market is very wheelchair and stroller friendly. We have clean secure indoor restroom facilities, and great parking. Stop by 5th and Ave. J between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm Saturday mornings. You’ll find us in the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts Plaza.
