July 18th Market Review

By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates

I had several people comment on what a beautiful day it was, and I had to agree.

The morning started out very busy with shoppers showing up in good numbers. The old saying “The early bird catches the worm,” is so true when it comes to filling your shopping bag with great fresh farm produce. We had quite a few visitors from out of town, some coming back to Lubbock to live, others bringing their kids to Texas Tech sponsored camps. There were people from Sundown, San Angelo, Glen Rose, Temple, McKinney, and Dallas.

The shoppers continued to flow into the plaza for the better part of the morning.

The family farmers were doing high volume sales as their produce went very quickly. Sunburst Farms, Forbes Family Backyard Farm, Faith2Farm and Block 20 team up to supply our Market with tomatoes, potatoes, onions, squash, corn, peppers, cucumber, black-eyed peas, fresh eggs and so much more. Great job Market Farmers!

We welcomed two new vendors… Candy Co. by Lo, whose company motto is “Life is too short for boring candy!”, and Creative Acres who brought a multitude of indoor and out door plants that sold very quickly.

We have vendors selling handmade items like paracord bracelets, key rings, wire finger rings, beaded necklaces, and earrings  We have custom made one of a kind tee shirts and shopping bags. There are homemade All Natural Soaps. For the kids Lil Bit of Heaven has a very wide variety of animal plushies.

Our bakers are bringing a variety of bread loafs like banana, zucchini, and pumpkin. Also there are brownies, cinnamon rolls, cookies and sour dough breads.

Our SNAP benefits booth is here to help SNAP recipients with our Double Up Food Bucks Texas program. It’s a great deal! If your family receives SNAP don’t pass this up. Stop by early and fill up your shopping bags.

We have a great spot for our Market in the LHUCA Plaza, which provides shady areas where people can sit and enjoy the morning listening to our house band Snail Farm, or enjoy a lunch items from Phil Me Up Filipino food truck. Our Plaza is easily navigated as it is wheelchair and baby stroller friendly. Our indoor bathroom facilities are kept clean and secure. Parking is a breeze with easy access to the Market Plaza.

We had many dog visitors, and the selection of our Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day was so difficult we decided to have two winners. Meet Jovie and Trevor! They both get to take a Red Bandana home as a prize for participating in our Market.

We would like to thank our regular customers who come out every week and support our Market, and all of the out of town guests who took the time to stop by and see what our Market has to offer. We are in the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts Plaza located at 5th and Ave. J. every Saturday Morning form 9:00 to 1:00. We invite you to come out. Bring your friends and summer visitors. See you next Saturday on July 25th.
