Market Review Aug. 1

By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates

Set up at the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market was a breeze….a cool breeze.

After the early morning rain we were treated to some lower temperatures and a nice soft breeze from the east. We had a small vendor count as some of our regulars were off on vacation. However, those of us who set up enjoyed a brisk sales day.

People from around the state showed up to see what we had to offer. Our guests included people from San Antonio, New Braunfels, DeLeon, Houston and somewhere out in East Texas. We even had a lady here from Germany! One of our regular farmers was on vacation, but Sunburst Farms, Block 20 and Faith 2 Farm brought in some great produce. The extreme heat is causing a bit of a stress factor on the crops, but we are still seeing tomatoes, corn, okra, squash, onions, black eyed peas, eggplant, peppers, radishes and more. Our farmers are also providing jams, jellies, salsas, and local honey.

We are happy to be participating in the SNAP Program and have a booth set up with our SNAP and WIC expert Max. He is ready to help you get double your dollar value when you visit our Market.

Lil’ Bite Of Heaven held down the baking chores with fabulous mini bread loaves like banana, zucchini, blueberry, and several other delicious choices.

Our artisans are bringing beautiful, handmade jewelry and paracord bracelets. There is a wide variety of necklaces and earrings to choose from as well.

Need a house plant? Get your green thumb going. We have a wonderful selection.

Oklahoma Flats is selling homemade tallow based oils and lotions to help with any aches or pains you might need help with For the kids we have adorable crocheted plushies and beautiful children’s books. If you have a need for gifts for upcoming birthdays, weddings, anniversaries or just gifting to be kind, come by and see our wide selection.

We are lucky to have a fun little band playing for your enjoyment. Snail Farm does a wonderful job covering all kinds of music with their special creative touch. Chairs are set up and we invite you to check out the entertainment! They are paid by tips only, so help them out!

Not only do we have music, but our plaza is welcoming with shady areas to sit and enjoy the morning. We have wheelchair and baby stroller friendly surfaces and clean and secure indoor bathroom facilities. Oh… and parking is never a problem!

Each week we are happy to choose our Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day. Stella showed up, and she was so well mannered and happy to be at the Market that we presented her with the Dog of the Day Red Bandana. Congratulations Stella!

Our Market is located in the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts Plaza on 5th and Ave. J. We open for business at 9:00 and close at 1:00. Come early in order to beat the heat and get the best selections of produce. We hope you will visit us and bring a friend. See you on August 8th at our next Market.
