Market Review September 26th
By Paul Bullock & Mary Gates
What an absolutely beautiful morning we had for our Market, and the Texas Tech early home game. Tech took care of business, and so did we. We knew that some of our shoppers would be coming early in order to get home in time for kick off.
We also knew that we might be a little slow due to the game. It happens this time of year, but we were set and ready to go. The crowd did in fact show up early, and the first part of the morning was great. Then the pace slowed a bit, but all in all it was another successful Market.
We had two new vendors, both reporting that they did well. There were some beautiful wood engravings by JRG HatCo & Design. They make serving boards, wall hangings, paddles and cutting boards, all so skillfully made. Also new to the Market was Slim’s Spices. Slim puts together some great spices for your favorite meat dish and barbecue rubs.
We always have new shoppers popping by. This time of year, it is often a mom and dad coming to Lubbock to see their recently enrolled child at Tech. These are great to obverse. The parent and child have not seen each other for a month, and now they are strolling the Downtown Market together. So much fun to talk to these folks as they share with us their mini reunions. We had visitors from Odessa, Big Spring, and Frisco.
Another thing that makes me feel great is seeing the families receiving SNAP or on the WIC program putting locally grown fruits and vegetables in their bags. We are very proud to be associated with these vital organizations!
Just look at the wonderful bounty that our farmers bring to Market…carrots, onions, lots of squash, okra, cucumbers, leafy greens, peppers, corn and more. The farms also bring their homemade jams, jellies and local honey.
While our farmers are farming, our bakers are baking and our artists are making great gifts for the upcoming gift giving season. We have homemade soaps and lotions, and all sorts of jewelry to choose from.
We always have well behaved dogs that enjoy strolling the plaza at LHUCA. We always choose one to be our Tornado Industrial/Arts Dog of the Day. We are happy to introduce you to Harley. Harley gets a Red Bandana declaring him as DOG OF THE DAY!
We look forward to the fall weather, and our last 4 Markets. We hope you will find a little time on Saturday morning to stop by the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts Plaza. We have fully paved areas for wheel chair and strollers. Clean indoor bathrooms, and easy parking. Come on out! We are located at 5th and Ave. J from 9:00 am to 1:00pm.
